You can scratch off Toronto II, Hamilton (as Sabres & Leafs won't allow) and LOL....Yukon Territory. Minnesota is a hotbed but location where? Another team in Michigan is possible...say westrern area. Quebec for sure and what about Harford? They had fans. Las Vegas building new arena. KC.
TV markets are important BUT you have to have the support, interest, desire and actual following for the sport itself. Phoenix is in the 12th largest TV market yet don't follow hockey thereby not generating fan support. Atlanta is ahead of them in 9th and couldn't survive either. The Sabres are in the 51st TV market and pack them in....always have and now we have an owner who not only is a fan but understands the game! Even Penn State and hockey program will eventually surpass football due to his large donation for an arena If they move
it has to be the right city - Skeezix459
I wouldn't get near KC...I don't like Vegas much either, but it might work due to the freaky nature of that city...I'd be leery of Hartford as well...
I question their "really smart people" if average fans can see that the teams in Florida, the Islanders, Yotes, the Preds, and Hurricanes should be moved due to the fact that hockey doesn't work there... - Flyfreaky
There you go and here we go. Now that you have insulted 1/6th of the leagueg, we will have all of the fans of these teams, that esentially have relatively small cult followings, telling you how their team will make it and is great.

Come on, it wasn't anything about their fan base...Just looking at the reality of their location and being viable...
You don't have to convince me. I am tired of this talk about all of these struggling teams, profit sharing, and teams that can't sell out consistenly. - Patrickj
What pisses me off is this moving out of Winnipeg and then moving back...Leaving Minnesota and then moving back...Now Quebec...WTF, you got it right the first time...

Cliche watch: You don't know what you have, til' its gone. Soooooo stupid, but thats been the NHL's deal over the last few moves. Winnipeg is a powderkeg now and it is really fun to see. I agree that they shouldn't have left, but with today's market and the way the NHL is growing, going back is the best possible move. Almost everywhere north people want the game. Lets pack some gear boys!

Not worth a penny over 4 mil a year - ernmerica
Hard to disagree on what he is worth to an NHL team from a money standpoint, but, Its a FA deal and he has to be convinced to leave Pheonix...so just like ALL the other FAs these days, with a few exceptions, he will be paid more than $4 million. The only way he stays there or takes less is if he stays in Pheonix.
The NHL needs to cut its price to a more reasonable $150M.
Shane Doan signs a 4-year deal paying him $2.5M/year in cash and $5M/year in equity in the team.
That throws about $40M more in resources at the shortage which supposedly is only something like $20M. Shane Doan gets to stay in Phoenix and has a stake in helping his city/team out, and he also gets something to do post playing career.
At this point they are short only 1 savior player in the draft from being the Pittsburgh Penguins of the west. - CarolinaMatt63

i think the issue is less that the Phoenix LOCAL market is not generating fan support, but for those LARGE national TV deals, Phoenix acts as a huge gateway market to the rest of the west coast. the footprint of the Phoenix area pushes into vegas as well as west into Cali. it's the easiest/best way for the NHL to show relevance to a HUGE demographic territory without having 3 teams all around the area.
they don't get the same type of TV deal without that assurance....and at the end of the day, that's WAY more money than just ticket revenue for the teams could ever account for.

I think another Minnesota team would be interesting. As a Minnesota fan what do you think? - HopintheCordoba
As far as Minne goes, it's a great hockey state, especially high school and college. U of M, U of M Duluth, St. Cloud State etc... Not sure Mpls/St.Paul is a large enough market for 2 teams, in terms of revenue. Maybe Duluth/Superior, or Fargo/Moorehead, both huge hockey areas. Rochester I think is the 3rd most populated city in Mn behind Mpls and St. Paul.
I don't think Wisconsin would be a terrible option either, maybe a Millwaukee venue?

If he doesn't choose Phoenix, I can't see any way he doesn't come to Van. He can have a nice horse ranch in Langley right near the Abbotsford airport which is a small 45 minute flight to Kamloops which he's part owner of the WHL's Blazers. His wifes from B.C and he is. The only way he doesn't is if it's about money. - Boinker
Or if he's about success in the, you know, postseason. Where it really matters.

Doan still has something to bring but he will not net more than 50 pts and the intangibles are there but not worth the 4 yr risk.
Id feel WAY more comfy with 1yr 7.5 - ernmerica
Well, if that's what it's gonna take and the market is there for that, then I hope the Flyers are the team that gets him...Although, I think he can't stand Bryz...Come to think of it, neither can I...

Doan may be the least money-driven player in the league?
How about giving that title to Daniel Alfredsson"
- Took a paycut to ensure the team could afford to keep some of it's young stars a few years ago.
- Will play out the last year of his contract paying him $1 million only. This is a guy that scored 27 goals last year and was offered a contract extension to compensate him for his low salary... he refused so he could honor his contract.
