I apologize for the rant on guns, I read that story that was posted and it got my blood boiling. This isn't the proper forum to discuss guns. I will delete my posts regarding that topic.

I don't think that guy in the story bought his guns at the local Richard's sporting goods. Also all I'm gonna say about gun laws is fine go ahead take away all guns and instead of 12 dead at that movie theater you would have had over a hundred when he loads up a rental box truck with explosive fertilizer and crashes it into the building. See Oklahoma City bombing, minus the crashing.

Last time I recall something like that was Sylvia Seegrist back in the 80's

Hey man, if you were to ask me, the best areas in the city for getting good craft beer are Fishtown, Northern Liberties, parts of South Philly and Old City.

I would tell you Fishtown, hands down, but you won't be finding many hotels to stay around there. Kraftwork, Memphis Taproom, Johnny Brendas, Standard Tap and Interstate Drafthouse are all great bars with great craft selections.

South Philly has South Philly Tap Room, POPE and a few others. Center City or Old City are great options because they have many bars in walking distance. Good luck!

I would say the center city area is probably best for ease of transportation and places to stay, etc. I'd much rather hang at the bars you mentioned above, but there are still some good spots in center city.

Totally random question (sorry Meltzer): I'm part of an annual sport trip and this fall we're hitting your great town of Philadelphia, gonna cheer you guys on when you take it to the Leafs in late October. Besides getting tickets, we have no idea where is the best part of town to stay. We want to have easy access to the train, but we also want to be able to walk to as many good bars as possible. Can someone give us an idea of best bars in Philly? Not looking for rave parties or martini bars, just a good place to hop from bar to bar and get some good beers. Thanks!

You may find it cheaper to stay in South Jersey (perhaps the Voorhees area where the flyers practice) and take the train in to the city (about $3) From there you can hop on the subway which drops you right at the doorstep of the Wells Fargo center.

not sure where he got them per say, but they were all acquired legally. The maniac who shot up the VA Tech campus walked into a gun shop in Roanoke, VA and walked out with a few firearms, despite having a record of visiting a psychologist. Something like that should never happen.

I was referring to the guy in the Philly story too btw not sure I made that clear when I mentioned buying the guns at a sporting goods store. There's undoubtedly loopholes in our system. My point is this no matter the laws we pass there will be a way and a means for these maniacs to conduct their acts. Imo the Colorado incident could have been prevented had certain people acted accordingly. Like you said the guy mailed a letter illustrating what he wanted to do. Also before he did this, he was in the movie theater went out through the emergency exit, blocked the door and cameback. I've been saying for years, Emergency exits should be used for just that Emergencies, and if they are not closed when used why is there movie theater security? Too much of the little stuff went wrong in this case and a lot of people are dead. Last thing I'm gonna say, don't think for a minute if this guy doesn't get the death penalty he will spend the rest of his life feeling sorry or thinking about what he did, he will not and I know this first hand! I've been up on NJ's deathrow unit before it was dissolved, last thing these animals think about is how sorry they are, its more like, where's my commisary mother (frank)er, the commissary the taxpayers pay for btw.

edit jist of what I'm saying is make the punishments fit the crime, and just maybe these whack jobs will be deterred for a change.

It's okay I've said all i'm going to say, not going to debate just sharing thoughts and beliefs, but I appreciate you sharing that becasue my mother and sister both ride that freakin speedline into philly to go to work and I've been telling them for years not too, to just drive or get a job closer to home already.

When looking at the potential market for UFA defensemen in 2013 and even 2014, one thing seems rather obvious to me... The Flyers need to trade for a defenseman, if they hope to get an above average one.  There are absolutely no big names that hit the open market over the next couple of seasons.  There are however, a lot of great forwards that will potentially hit the open market next summer (Iginla, Perry, Getzlaf, Clarkson, Morrow, Horton, Clowe, Weiss).  As much as I'd love to see the Flyers get Bobby Ryan, I'd much rather see them wait and see who steps up this season and possibly add a guy like Perry or Iginla at the trade deadline or in the offseason through free agency.  The Flyers forwards are deep and there will potentially be a great market for them to add even more pieces over the next couple of seasons.  You cannot say the same about their defenseman though.  The open market for them is very shallow over the next couple of seasons and they need to make a trade, if they hope to significantly improve their back end.  I'd love to see them add Boumesteer, if the asking price isn't too high.  He does have a hefty cap hit, but they could absorb it no problem without Pronger being there and with Timonen's salary coming off the cap this offseason, they could most likely absorb it next season as well.  It's a huge risk, but I don't see the Flyers with a lot of options going forward with their defense.

Your right, there aren't a lot of Free Agent options coming up. But in my opinion you don't trade for a player who doesn't play to his Cap hit like Bouwmeester. I'd rather wait for the right move to come around then acquire a player with an over inflated Cap hit who isn't worth it.

They had in one Pronger. Do you find it somewhat unbelievable that this is Pronger's first confirmed concussion and it ended his career? Other players have suffered multiple concussions and have recovered.

I believe that Pronger had his vision severely damaged from getting hit in the eye by the stick, and that is a huge contributing factor in why he is having issues.

Thing is , Pronger played in the days when conkys were treated as no big deal, "ahh you just got your bell rung, shake it off" so he probably had indeed suffered one earlier in his career, if not it just goes to show why you need depth on a sports team, any play can be career ending.

Yes, good point. I'm sure he had concussions before and just played through them. That was standard protocol for years.

As an eye injury situation, the stick to the face was pretty brutal looking. As a concussion hit, though, I thought it seemed rather ordinary compared to the brutal malicious hits we've seen around the league. It's scary how quickly a career can end like that.

Absolutely. I believe the stick to the eye was such a violent blow that it caused a concussion that was never diagnosed, subsequently Pronger came back far to early and the concussion became much worse.

What's crazy is he said he's 'never felt like this before' (or something to that effect), so I'm not certain he has had an undiagnosed concussion in the past. Not that it makes a difference, but what may be a first concussion ends a career characterized by toughness and willingness to play through pain. Reality can be so unforgiving.

In retrospect, it's so fortunate Giroux made a complete recovery without incident from his.

....in leiu of watching the Flyers/Pens ECQF game 3, I want to say that as far as steaming bags of hot poop of the NHL goes, James Neal is VASTLY underrated.

As far as barhopping goes, I'd say the Old City is the best part for that. Between Market Street and South Street and Front Street to maybe like 12th? Lots of good stuff on Market and other east-west streets around it. S. Street is about a 15 minute (albeit nice) walk from Market. It's a nice area right by the river and bridge. Love it there.

Only caveat is that you're a good chunk worth of City from the sports complex. I don't know what train you mean, but you can easily get to 30th Street Station as well as the sports complex, however it would be via subways.

To get to 30th Street Station, you'd simply hop on the Market-Frankford Line at the 2nd and Market Street stop (which is the last stop before it turns north and goes above ground) and head west to the 30th Street stop. Get topside, and 30th Street Station is 100 feet away.

To get to the Sports complex, you'd take the Market-Frankford Line once again, but one stop further to 15th street, where you'd follow the signs to pick up the Broad Street Line. DO NOT GO TOPSIDE BECAUSE YOU'D LOSE YOUR FREE INTERCHANGE and that would be a sad time. The walk underground is weird...kind of long...it's going to feel wrong the first time but if you're unsure ask someone that looks like they won't kill you. Pick up the Broad St Line and head south to the last stop at AT&T station. Once you hit topside, you're literally right outside the parking lot.

I can't help you with names of good bars because I'm only 18. Hope this helps though

if closeness to bars and ease of access to public trans are the main factors, i'd say just stay in center city

but seriously, i think he's a good candidate. i definitely want a vet, he's done it before, and i don't think the increased media attention will have any impact on him. danny seems to handle that stuff fine, and i think that's important here (whether it should be or not)
