I think I would look at taking a Shot at Colaiacovo as well as looking at a possible trade with Winnipeg. Enstrom may have signed and Byfuglien maybe out of the picture. But Hainsey & Clitsome are all UFA's next year. Hainsey is solid while Clitsome has some Offensive upside. Or if we really wanted to unload some talent for the future Bogosian would not be a bad investment.
As Homer was already kicking the tires on trades, I think Mez going down opened the floor with another Defensive spot.
Needless to say, this all kind of sucks. - flyler
You make solid points. However, Homer has known about Mez's injury for over a week now. I wouldn't be surprised if he gives his own current roster players a chance before making a move. |

Reagrdless, our D is still better than the Pens as is. Don't see why we can't compete and contend with the rest of the East. - LordStanley88
You think? I would say it was close giving the edge to the Flyers before Mez was ruled out. I see us with the edge now, slight one but one none the less.
The young guys we have showed success in the NHL already. Small sample area but better then nothing. Our d prospect pool is pretty deep. Even after saying this I hope we go and get a 5-6 player. |

Agreed...now that Mesz is injured, I also have a strange urge to trade away some of our top players in the hopes of getting other players who may not be as good as them. - feelingkettle
Better then trading any of our youth for some stop-gap like Jaybo or Gonchar. If your not thinking rebuild, then at least just sign some guys like CC or something, see where we are at in Feb and move from there. |

What makes you think the Flyers are anywhere near a rebuild? They had 103 points last season.
I'm not understanding your logic here.

Maybe rebuild is the wrong term... Retool. The Flyers lost Carle, Jagr, Bobrovsky, and now Meszaros. We traded JVR for Schenn which was a lateral move IMO... You really cant say this team is better then last years, and the Rangers have only gotten better, and the Penguins have 2 of the top players in the league and 1 defenseman that is near the top....
I can easily see us making the playoffs as a low seed, or missing them all together. Even if we do make the playoffs, to go through NYR, Pitt, Boston.... I dont know man....
I think I would rather protect the core of the team, and see if I can get assets for our soon to be departed vets like Hartnell and Timonen.. Maybe you can even move Briere to give Schenn and Couts time at center (though its not likely). Then use the picks/prospects to restock the minors and keep the youth movement going while targeting UFA's next off-season to replace what we lost this year....
Though I could be overeacting, its just how I feel right now. |

It's defiitely a lot closer now, but I want to see how guys like Morrow, Despres, etc. fare with more minutes before I'd give the Pens an edge.
You definitely have a nice pipeline, but that doesn't mean zilch at the moment.
Plus, by all acounts Meszy will be back by the playoffs barring mutliple setbacks. |

Yea, it's ludicrous to think the Flyers are in rebuild mode. They will compete this year. |

The thing is that the Flyers may not be interested in a multi year deal for Colaiacovo. |

Yea, I wouldn't be either.
I'd prefer Roszival, or someone like that, for 1 year. |

When Despres was up last year he made solid plays and no bone headed rookie mistakes. I think he will be a definite this year but as you said Morrow is a toss up. We have Martin, Orpik (first summer for 3 years he hasn't needed surgery), Nisk (who showed he is a solid option last year), and last but not least Letang. Then to round it out Eng, Strait and Lovejoy.
I seriously think Despres plays in the top four this year. Next year I will be more comfortable with the young guys once Harrington, Morrow, Dumoulin (who was looked highly upon in Carolina) etc get some more experience.
As you said Mez will be back for the playoffs and that is what matters. Should be interesting to see if either the flyers or pens sign anyone else this offseason or just roll the dice. |

Isn't there such a thing as the young players getting better that are already on the team? So there is a built in mechanism for the team to be better then last year as far as that goes, that is seems your overlooking. And you can't have a team of all young players. You need veterans in the mix. |

FYI, Homer would not confirm nor deny that Pronger was attempting a comeback in his interview this morning. Timmy asked the question. - LordStanley88
I said before that Watson told me Pronger was going to attempt a comeback this year. Whether it was wishful thinking or a sign that he's not as bad as previously thought, I'm not sure. All I know is he's a warrior and if he can play he will. That being said, I'm not going to hold my breath. There's a big difference between attempting a comeback and actually accomplishing it.
I wonder what they will do now with Mez sidelined. They have to wonder whether or not he's going to be able to be the impact player we were hopin for after back and Achilles surgery. That will put him off the ice for almost if not an entire year if you exclude the one playoff game he played in. |

I'm not expecting anything from Mez for this season. The team has to take the approach that he will not return. |

As of now, I see the US WJC pairings work out as follows: Reilly-Jones, Skjei-Trouba, Gostisbehere-Murphy. Welinski as the extra.
Can we try to get the nickname Ghostface Killah going?
