I would think he's looking for a multi year deal. - MJL
I would think given his terrible injury history and the fact that he still hasn't signed somewhere is telling. He can want a multi year deal all he likes, no ones going to give him one.
Id offer a 2 year deal at max if it ment he signed here, but nothing else. Were not even going to get a ton of actual offense from him, but he is good at moving the puck and he's mobile, something we need desperately. |

I'd say stay the course, let the kid's grow.
Everyone is concerned with Gustafsson's size. I think he'll be alright.
I also think with more ice time he'll put up more offensive numbers.
Gustafsson could turn into a reliable top 4 two-way defenseman.
MAB doesn't project as high IMO but is still steady and serviceable in a 3rd pairing environment.

It's premature to say that he isn't going to get a multi year deal. |

I think the worst thing the Flyers can do is waste their recently acquired cap space on another UFA D-Man.
Every player Bill listed has no upside. Only limited ability & durability.
I'm calling it right now. Brandon Manning makes this team out of camp, and will be the surprise player for the Flyers this season. He moves the puck well, has good composure, plays physical, likes to mix it up and has a pretty good shot from the point.
Gus, MAB and Manning all have upside to their games and careers. All the UFA defenseman are suspect.
If your team defense is going to have a few growing pains during a season, I'd rather see them happen with young players getting experience and getting better. Every single UFA D will just be a year long liability when the games count in March-June.

Also the Flyers may just have to toss Lauridsen and Manning into the fire this season, pending injuries. Maybe there's an actual NHL defenseman between the two. |

Did the NHL rule on the Lubomir Visnovsky hearing? If that trade is nullified perhaps the Flyers can send a 2nd out to Anaheim for him. |

I see nothing wrong with the Flyers going into the season with the current group. The Flyers can upgrade during the season if necessary. |

I support your post. No need to upgrade until we see how this team does with what they currently have. Flyers can upgrade whenever they feel the defense is becoming an issue. |

What this blog tells me is that someone serviceable with some NHL experience will be available and affordable before the season starts.

Injury issues or not, I'm sorry, one of Coliacavo/Clark/Kubina is a necessity at this point. - mochoson
Agreed, we should be get at least a couple games out of any of those guys. But I'd also put in Spacek too. I doubt Kubina will be back, I don't think he impressed Lavy or Homer that much. Though Giroux was very good about pointing out his contributions in the Playoff's while hurt. |

Kubina can still play heavy minutes if healthy. Also moves the puck more then admirably and has a heavy shot.
I'm not expecting them to trade for anyone. If their not bringing in a guy like Clark or Kubina, theyll give a try-out to a guy like Campoli or Eaton. |

Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Meszaros Injury Impact Isn't Pretty - bmeltzer
There's the possibility that Meszaros won't miss as much of the season as people are expecting... apparently it's a tear, and not a complete rupture, so there's some room for optimism. Justin Williams had a similar injury during the '08 offseason and initial reports assumed an arduous 6-9 months recovery period... he only missed a couple of months of the season, although he was pretty ineffective when he did return. |
