That happens all the time with older players; they have one final good year after have a bad year or two and then go on to play poorly again the next year. I wouldn't give up any type of asset for Gonchar also considering how poor he is in his own end. He's 38 now. I'd rather take a chance on someone else.
- NickTheKid87

Gonchar has always been inconsistent in his own end of the ice, but there have been times where he's been just fine defensively apart from the points he's put up. During the Flyers-Penguins playoff series of 2008 and 2009, I was shocked at how well he played defensively apart from the points he put up.

Of course, Gonchar is now 38 years old and massively overpaid. I wouldn't mind him as a rental later in the season, since he's a UFA after the season.

Whoever we sign or trade for, they will be a stopgap measure and won't really help the team that much. I'd still be a little surprised if they make a move right away.

R. Gervais, MAB, Gus, and Lilja. There are 4 guys for 2 spots. What am I missing?

I predict that they will wait for the season, if there is one, to play out.

BTW - Nashville still sucks.

You may not like me, and you may not like what I say, but I have been more right than most of you. Don't hate the player, don't even hate the game. Just learn to love Da Man!

So Bourdon takes a pay cut right? I thought his previous deal was around 800 per? Good value for the flyers providing he stays healthy

Might as well go with the kids. I doubt any one of the available garbage pickers would put this team over the top. If they look like they could make some real noise in the spring then make a move. Dont waste players or picks for crap and give the kids a REAL shot.

Slight pay cut -- the value of his qualifying offer was a shade over $700k. I'm guessing it's a one-way deal.

Not really a paycut. His previous deal was for more money -- especially when signing bonus money was added into base salary -- but he was on a two-way deal. He spent the first two years of his career in the AHL, making $65,000 plus his signing bonus distribution. Last season, he made the prorated portion of about $765,000 for the portions of the season he spent in the NHL and prorated $65K for the time in the AHL.

The new deal is a one-way contract, and the extra season on the contract makes up for the slight decrease in base salary.

Good deal for both sides.

I'd take him now as long as poop is going back. He can help the team, Flyers can fit his cap easily and won't cost much in trade assets I would think.

I'm with you there. Much rather give the kids a shot then take on a past his prime player such as Kaberle, with multiple years left on his deal.

I wouldn't say they can fit his Cap hit easily. They would have to dip into LTIR to fit him. And possibly even have to jettison salary to fit him into the Off season Cap. More reasons that point towards giving the kids a shot, and as Bill suggested. And taking on someone like Gonchar at the deadline if needed.

I'd rather take a chance on the best guy who can potentially fill the position who isn't going to cost us current roster players. If that's Gonchar, that's fine with me.
