In my opinion:
1) They have tended to prefer to draft big-bodied but modestly-skilled defensemen who didn't have much upside to begin with (Kenny, Mallette,Beckett, Forbes)
2) Many of the more athletic/skilled D showed questionable hockey sense even at the lower levels (Ratchuk, Bodrov, etc)@TGfireandice: RT @walsha: The average NHL ticket price has increased 39% since 2004 when Gary Bettman promised fans a salary cap would lower ticket prices
3) Organizational impatience: Too many young D who DID show early promise as pros got rushed a bit and then fell out of favor when they struggled-- thinking here of players like Niinimaa, Seidenberg, Eaton, Picard. - bmeltzer
Makes sense. I'm just trying to figure out how these other teams develop their defenseman compared to the Flyers. I don't think the Flyers are doing anything that drastic from other clubs to stunt a defensemans growth. |

yea I don't know how I feel about him doing that movie. Like his music but sometimes he's too psychedelic gore for my taste. Thought he did a good job with the first Halloween installment then (frank)ed it up by making an over the top weirdo session with the sequel. - JoeRussomanno
I am a pretty big horror movie guy. I liked house of 1000 corpses and the Devils Rejects. The guy isn't afraid to lay it all on the table for sure haha.
I agree though, the sequel he did for Halloween wasn't great. |

Didn't want to mention house and rejects I just don't like those kinds of horror movies. For some reason the old 80's slasher types don't bother me but when we get into wearing people's skin and eating them then I get weirded out.
Edit: For what its worth I'd have like to see Oliver Stone do the Bullies movie, oh well |

haha yea....some people don't like the whole torture scene which is big nowadays. I am a bigger fan of the stuff from the 70s/80s but I will still watch it. Always gets my blood pumping

I disagree. That wasn't changed by the Meszaros injury. That competition for playing time was still going to be there regardless. The potential silver lining is that one of those "fringe NHL players" as you put it, can take the opportunity and run with it. And prove that maybe they are more then they were thought to be.
So how do want to look at it? With pessimism and negativity. And whine repeatedly about it? Or with optimism and a positive attitude?
Can I guess which perspective you'll choose? - MJL
So, let me get this straight...it's ok when you are being optimistic and positive, explicitly including the idea that maybe one of the unproven young D men on the Flyers roster will turn out to be more than they were thought to be...but when I express a similar "optimistic and positive" view by posing that Bourdon (one of those fringe guys) could be a second pairing D man someday (which is more than what is thought to be) that is grounds for ridicule, criticism and strong refutation. Got it.

if the movie becomes more about blood and gore than the real stuff that went on I'll be pissed. |

So I read a recent article that quoted Rob Zombie saying he is going to gore up this flick on the broad street bullies. I am pretty pumped for this.

Hey bud. Before worrying about Zombie's piece of ...., check out the HBO special on the BS bullies. Excellent, and I am guessing will be much better than RZ's gore. |

Huge difference between being optimistic and hopeful. Versus inaccurately stating a players potential. Such as thinking that Bourdon's potential is a top 4 defenseman. You can be hopeful that he exceeds his potential, as it's not an exact science. But the reality is that his potential is that of a 3rd pair defenseman in this League.
It's really a pretty simple concept!
I like Eric Wellwood, and I'm hopeful that he becomes a top line Winger! That doesn't make his potential that of a top line Winger!

I don't think it will. He also said he wanted to focus more on the decade and what was going on in America at the time. I think the gore will just be a fun side show. |

Deja Vu all over again.
I am optimistic not just on players. I believe through hard work, anyone can excel.

Over the same time period, the Detroit Red Wings have drafted 41 defensemen. 10 of them have played any games in the NHL.
Detroit also took twice as many defensemen in round one as compared to the Flyers over that time.

These arent opinions, just ideas:
Flyers have one of the best records over a long period. Drafting late.
Skilled players play offense, not defense. So more skilled players at draft time are forwards
Elite d prospects go early
Not many great d men in the league compared to elite forwards
D develop slower
Flyers have prefered vets over rookie and young d

No, 31 of the 41 defensemen Detroit drafted since 1995 never played a shift in the NHL.
They did have several high quality picks, like Kyle Quincey & Nicklas Kronwall. The key difference is that the Red Wings are patient with their picks. |

Love quoting the great ones. I just reviewed the 2002 draft with Pitkanen. J-bo drafted before. Every team passed on Duncan Keith. Not a lot coming out in the draft.
My guess is that many drafts are like this. On average, do users feel other teams are developing better D. Or are they luckier or spend more resources. Again, consider the Flyers are consistenly in the playoffs.

You gotta he kidding with this. The site is owned, period. There's no "buts" it's owned and if you want to post on it you follow the rules.
The rules on HB are no different then the rules on eBay, Craigslist or any publicly used site where you can post stuff.
eBay - cant sell live animals
Hockeybuzz - cant post offensive , abusive, racist or derogatory comments |

I sorta agree. But I tried selling live cattle on the Pens board, and still got banned. What gives? I guess Canadianpenfan thought this was ebay. |
