At times as much as a 100 thousand or more NYer's apply for and take the Written Exam to become a NY City Police Cadet. If they score high enough. The next step is a Physical Test of agility and endurance. If they score high enough. They are then thoroughly examined thru a series of Medical exams and Fluid testing.

Those who get thru all those steps are then given a psychiatric evaluation. Which does weed out a few more candidates.

Finally after passing all those steps. Its into the Cadet program. Where a candidate can still FAIL!

So NY finest refers to the select few individuals who make it thru the vast numbers of people who apply become NY City Police Officers, pass all the test and make it thru to graduation. No small feat.

I'm personal friends with a few of the current & past Ice Girls, met & worked with them at rinks in NYC/Queens. They know they're eye candy for the crowd and don't mind being told they look great in the outfits but there's a line not to cross and getting personal about an 18-25 yr olds' complexion is bad taste, lest you're willing to put yourself under the microscope and post your photo. They're all better skaters than any of us will ever be...shoveling can be taught and actually parlayed into a decent-paying union job, along with sweeping and getting coffee.

OK, I went to Page 1 and read the original reference to NYPD Finest. (may have been better referred to as NY's Finest because its an oxymoron)
NY's Finest refers to the Police dept and nothing else. As NY's Bravest refers to the Fire Dept.

I dont see how this changes anything. When referring to NY's finest. Those who made the Police Department from the thousands that applied are the finest that NY had to offer. When 100,000+ apply and only a thousand or so make it into the Department. Hence NY's Finest.
