I expected more Strome love here in the blog today?
What's going on?
Big Game and moment for our Isles prospect.
Isn't this what we wanted for Bailey... development???
Can you see Strome playing with JT this year.... or does he head back to St. Catharines for another year?
Dominate JR's for the year.... represent Canada @ the World Jr's, then make the move next year?
I wish he could play with the Ice Dogs until after the World Jr's... then play with Nelson, Nino, Casey, de Haan, etc... in Bridgeport. - jimmc7722
While I would rather see Strome in the minors or Bridgeport, but I wouldn't be suprised if he is the 2nd line center for the Islanders this year. |

I think that its very rare that a player should step right into the NHL. ESPECIALLY when they're expected to play first line minutes. Tavares play from season 1 vs last year was light years different. He came outta the draft and looked like a boy playing against men. The isles (Snow) was desperate for offense and therefor threw all these kids into the fire....
If the isles had a real first line.........then JT could have played under their guidance. But, finding his own way is a far cry from developing.
Its not how it should be done. The last elite forward the isles had in their system was Ziggy Palffy. He was called up mid season, and ONLY played a few games. He wasnt drafted and then in the lineup that next season. He went back and forth from the farm team to the big club. THATS how it should be done. Ease their way in..... |

I think the big question is, can Ryan Strome and his small frame handle the physicality of the NHL? I agree that he's got talent, but I dont know if he's physically ready to take an NHL hit. I hope im wrong.......but he seems tiny to me.

For the record, i watched his OT goal, and was not impressed. That pullback move and the soft wrister arent gonna get it done in the NHL. First of all NHLers play the body not the puck (most of the time) and secondly, that wrister was like a Gervais shot. An NHL goalie saves that..

The question you should be asking, is how many of those teams are relevant? Its easy to throw your first rounder in the show when you have a playoff team. But the isles had NOONE. Tavares was expected to come in and carry the team. Thats not developing...!!!

wouldnt it be safe to say none of them were particularly relevant considering the fact that the #1 pick is generally the previous seasons worst team in the league??
so id say just about all werent relevant and not many had playoffs in their sight when they threw their #1 pick on the ice.... |

You who watches hockey, can you seriously say that this goal was impressive? I get it he scored, but that toe drag and soft wrister aint cutting it in the NHL.

There are 30 first round draft picks and obviously players like Couturier are able to step in and play with a lot less pressure on the flyers, then Taylor Hall who came in to a similar situation to the isles.
As a seperate example, Tyler Seguin was drafted 2nd overall and went to a cup team and was noticable on the ice. Might of had something to do with the fact that he wasnt carrying load.. |

yes he is being paid.
can you understand (not necessarily "agree") why people may call you an angry debbie downer regardless of the circumstances considering one of the islanders top prospects scores a game winning goal and you rank on him? |

Dude i dont care what you call me............i know this game, ive played it, and that goal was bushleague.
Conversely is it possible that you're just overhyping an isles prospect??? Im being honest.......im not dumping on Strome. The goal was average |

How about this........you are arguing with me and im saying that the isles player developement is non existant. If you disagree with me, then we have nothing further to discuss. YOU ARE THE ONE who is arguing. IM pointing out the problem.

haha youre losing focus of the topic...
in your original comment you said JT, nino, bailey (?) should have been developed before being threw onto an NHL team...i questioned why you included JT...i than asked how many #1 picks have been sent anywhere but the team that drafted said player.
if you want to expand this conversation and now include all 30 picks in the first round, than fine...but lets just acknowledge that isnt that topic at hand.

im not overhyping or underhyping strome...my point is the guy scored a goal and your immediate instinct is to find something wrong with it. if jon sim scored a game winning goal at the age of 45 i wouldnt start calling out why he sucks; id enjoy the fact that my player just scored a game winning goal. why is that so hard for some?

So after being banned for a few days I am back. I think Strome will be a great player with us. I actually feel he was selected to push Bailey out of the way. I really dont think Bailey will be with the team that much longer. Possibly his last year or half a year and get traded. He is on the Comeau watch this season and if he under performs (which all indications are he will) then he will be traded off the island. Could be the best thing for him will actually give hima chance to win. I swear every time some one gets traded and then we interview them when we play there new time they all have the biggest smiles on there face like Thank God I am out of there!! |

With the exception of Crosby and Ovechkin.......everyone of those first overall picks struggled their first year. Everyone of those teams had better teams than the isles. They all had veterans to mentor the players. The isles had one (doug weight), who barely played. Just because you're talented doesnt mean you should step in and be the go to guy. Tavares had NOOOONE
After Crosby and Ovechkin heres what you had
2007 Pat Kane (Sharp, Byfuglien, Toews)
2008 Stamkos (Vinny L, St Louis etc)
2009 Tavares (Doug Weight, Andy Sutton, Brendan Witt)
2010 Taylor Hall ( Eberle, Horcoff, Hemsky, Cogliano...........Mike Sillinger head oplayer developement)
2011 Nugent Hopkins (see above)
2012 (see above)
Some of these names dont match the others.......can we guess who???

Your honest assessment, do you feel Tavares' first year was the optimal way to bring him into the NHL? Putting a rookie as first-line center, and giving him as wingers KO, who was a second-year player who had never put in 20 goals, and Matt Moulson, who had never played a full season and certainly never enjoyed any kind of NHL success. Would GM/Coach LGI have put those three against the NHL's best defensemen night in and night out and believed that was the best thing for your prized prospect and potential franchise savior? In hindsight, it worked out OK. Tavares is a rare breed wrt his talent and above all, his drive and focus. KO played with an intensity we haven't seen since (though I think is still there, personally), and Moulson was a revelation...though I highly doubt even Snow would say he knew all along the guy would be a consistent 30-goal scorer.
But, I think we've seen the same approach of "throw the rookie into the fire with little to no support" not work out quite so well. That strategy seems like an unnecessary roll of the dice to me. I wouldn't mind rushing the kids so much if they just gave them some proper support. |

Bad example.........if Simmer dangled I'd give him credit. If Stome dangled, id give him credit. The OT winner was not an NHL caliber goal. |

My point to him as you are saying as well is that Tavares learned "on the job". That is NOT optimal for player developement

I never said he sucks.........i said the goal was below average, and I questioned if his size would be willing to take NHL punishment. The latter part was a question not a statement... |

actually strome could play AHL this year for the NHL-CHL agreement is up, so they may have a change in the age limit or limit of 19 year olds on a AHL team |
