haha youre losing focus of the topic...

in your original comment you said JT, nino, bailey (?) should have been developed before being threw onto an NHL team...i questioned why you included JT...i than asked how many #1 picks have been sent anywhere but the team that drafted said player.

if you want to expand this conversation and now include all 30 picks in the first round, than fine...but lets just acknowledge that isnt that topic at hand.

we are talking about #1 picks who were sent to play on another team other than the team that drafted them.....

I think the Isles are @ the point they can develop the kids properly now. There's enough depth to do it.

Just look @ the Bridgeport team this year... they will be ooozing with prospects.

From forwards to in net... when's the last time they had that. I would say never!!!

Strome, Reinhart, Mayfield, etc... will join them soon enough!!!

As much as fans want to cut up this team... I like where it's heading, and NO not to Quebec....

Exactly.........my original point was that this is why the rebuild is not where it should be. They threw the original picks from the rebuild into the show where they were expected to carry the weight of the team...

That is not how it should be done...

With the exception of Crosby and Ovechkin.......everyone of those first overall picks struggled their first year. Everyone of those teams had better teams than the isles. They all had veterans to mentor the players. The isles had one (doug weight), who barely played. Just because you're talented doesnt mean you should step in and be the go to guy. Tavares had NOOOONE

After Crosby and Ovechkin heres what you had

2007 Pat Kane (IN 2007: Sharp- 25y/o ,Byfuglien- 22 y/o , Toews- 21 y/o)
2008 Stamkos (Vinny L 28 y/o, St Louis- 33 y/o etc)
2009 Tavares (Doug Weight 38 y/o, Andy Sutton 34 y/o, Brendan Witt 34 y/o)
2010 Taylor Hall ( Eberle 20 y/o, Horcoff 32 y/o, Hemsky 27 y/o, Cogliano 23 y/o...........Mike Sillinger head oplayer developement--- so??)
2011 Nugent Hopkins (see above...see above)
2012 (see above...see above)

Some of these names dont match the others.......can we guess who???

- kindlyrick

a) not sure why crosby and ovechkin arent included in this discussion
b) look at the ages of the names you indicated; i dont think even an argument is necessary to show that tavares had 2nd most veterans behind him.
c) the fact that the oilers have had 3 #1 picks in a row show that playoffs werent really an option
d) if youre going to include mike sillinger with taylor hall because he is head of player development, ill include garth snow (*insert joke here)

MacKinnon will have Tavares, KO, Bailey, Streit, de Haan, Strome, Reinhart Grabner, Moulson, etc...

So he will be ok....

Your honest assessment, do you feel Tavares' first year was the optimal way to bring him into the NHL? Putting a rookie as first-line center, and giving him as wingers KO, who was a second-year player who had never put in 20 goals, and Matt Moulson, who had never played a full season and certainly never enjoyed any kind of NHL success. Would GM/Coach LGI have put those three against the NHL's best defensemen night in and night out and believed that was the best thing for your prized prospect and potential franchise savior? In hindsight, it worked out OK. Tavares is a rare breed wrt his talent and above all, his drive and focus. KO played with an intensity we haven't seen since (though I think is still there, personally), and Moulson was a revelation...though I highly doubt even Snow would say he knew all along the guy would be a consistent 30-goal scorer.

But, I think we've seen the same approach of "throw the rookie into the fire with little to no support" not work out quite so well. That strategy seems like an unnecessary roll of the dice to me. I wouldn't mind rushing the kids so much if they just gave them some proper support.

- UIF

exactly in hindsight it worked out....so lets not talk about the obvious.

in 2009 when tavares was drafted, how many people were hoping hed be starting the season in bridgeport or developing somewhere and not being a new york islander?

(to answer your question, if i were the GM i would have given him more to work with but NO SHOT IN HELL was he going anywhere other than the island)

Dude i dont care what you call me............i know this game, ive played it, and that goal was bushleague.

Conversely is it possible that you're just overhyping an isles prospect??? Im being honest.......im not dumping on Strome. The goal was average

Its funny my last convo w this guy he called me a b!tch and a woman then followed it up with me alaways reverting to name calling. Dont bother. If this guy was a quarter as smart as he thinks he is he might be smart. Best advice. Dont bother

The discussion was PLAYER DEVELOPEMENT, hence including Silly.
But, im arguing just to argue........you're arguing.

I didnt include Crosby and Ovechkin cause I didnt wanna go back any further. I thought my point was crystal clear. But., lets add them
2004 Ovechkin (Zubrus and a ton of role players...........what do you know they finished last in the southeast.) Difference here being Ovechkins offensive ability mzed with his size and speed had him play in the NHL.....scored 52 goals his first season.
2005 Crosby (MARIO LEMIUEX, Ryan Malone, Ziggy Palffy)

Which veterans are you referring to??? Of those players you're about to google and list......how many played with him. How many of those veterans dropped the gloves after he was getting elbowed in his dome piece after the whistle? Which veterans were relevant at the NHL level?

Heck they still dont have a liney that will standup for him..

This might sound obvious but for this upcoming season, i dont care what the organization spews..........the cup is out of reach. The goal this season should be to not have a losing streak of 20 games. That losing mentality is contagious. I dont care what has to happen........double shifting, benching, demoting.......if this team goes on a losing streak, it MUST be nipped in the bud.

Bad example.........if Simmer dangled I'd give him credit. If Stome dangled, id give him credit. The OT winner was not an NHL caliber goal.

Not every NHL goal is someone shelving it bardown on a laser. He had the presence of mind to not just fire the puck at the net, but instead have some patience, pull it back and wait for a better shooting lane. Shows that his hockey sense is there, that's something that can't be taught. Shooting technique can be.

I hear you, and i can agree with that. My point, was that while he scored the goal, i havent seen him really impress.......and that goal was not impressive.

I wasnt sh1tting on strome.........i just thought that goal isnt a goal in the NHL.

I think the big question is, can Ryan Strome and his small frame handle the physicality of the NHL? I agree that he's got talent, but I dont know if he's physically ready to take an NHL hit. I hope im wrong.......but he seems tiny to me.

he's 6 1 183...he'll be 200 when hes done growing?? how is that small?

Agreed. I just think it makes sense to protect your assets...both physically and with real veteran talent to provide examples and help them along. As we've seen over the past few years, not every young player is Tavares or Hamonic, who can rise above in spite of having little-to-no help.

Luckily, the next wave of youngsters, say, if Strome is on the Isles this year, will at least have Tavares, Moulson and Hamonic out there, who have talent and also some experience now.

And regarding Strome, I don't think we can really say "keep him here" or "send him back" until we get a look at him in camp.

He didn't necessarily 'wow' anyone in the series, but putting any real stock in 4 games in Aug. is crazy. I have no reason to worry about him yet, we'll see how he looks in training camp this year. As Pronman pointed out, his skating has notably improved, which was one of his biggest issues.
