I agree with your theory.. and I know that the bigger you are the most net you can cover... I did my whole thesis on goaltenders, reaction time, and puck velocity. I even created a standardized test to be used for goalies at a combine/try out much like a 40 yard dash is for football players...

My point being... angles account for much more of a goaltenders "coverage" than people understand.. Miller is not necessary lightening fast.. and neither is Quick or Lundqvist. They are not huge nor extremely fast.. but what they are.. is smart.. they use their angles in order to cover more of the net or take away angles.

i was a goalie and i am now an engineer... i understand the angles.. but in order to get to the NHL i think 99% of the goalies have that down fairly well therefore size starts to make a big difference, we are not comparing apples to avocados here when it comes to goalies ability to cut down an angle in the NHL.. Millers best part of his game is his positioning and ability to read the game, that is why when he is not mentally in it he is terrible.

Enroth really did drop off in the NHL after his first 30 games or soo... he didn't get much help though from the team with the 10th and 11th string dmen being called up last season. Enroths biggest weakness is his 5 hole

true, but can also think if you keep getting beat in teh corners you know expand your body to cover more area leaving the five hole open

that could be a logical explanation to his terrible five hole.. i never thought of that.

fair enough... I did not realize how big it was before my thesis.... the point of my thesis was to see if one goaltending style of stand-up vs butterfly vs hybrid was better utilized than the others.. but when I started the testing with USHL goaltenders it took to a whole different level about just natural genetics, experience, and angles rather than the importance of a style.

Do you guys think Enroth is our goalie of the future? or do you think that he's not good enough and cant handle a full workload.

But if 99% know the angles. To me the logical thing would be the change in speed of the game where they arent quick enough at the nhl level of shot quality or speed.

But as a guy who got tossed into playing goal in roller angles are pretty much everything and if you dont have it your killed.

Only cause I was bored.

It wouldnt let me bring up the box scores for the Atlanta games in which he had 7 points in.

Out of the other 77 points Vanek had in 06/07 43 of those Roy was not a part of.

Just some useless facts for the day.

- dadeadhead

I realize that he was on the third line duties however Roy was his center that year and even if he didn't get an assist for 1/2 of his games, max probably did.

I guess my point was that Vanek has been productive no matter who his center has been.

Vanek is much like my beloved Chris Carter (NFL).

Carter was always productive even when he was on crap team and had crap QB's. You never knew if he could be elite until Cunnigham/Moon/Culpepper started and he wasn't OMFG elite until he had Moss opposite of him.

Carter was a grinder who would have been (IMHO) better than Rice if he had a better QB. But you didn't know that until after the fact.

I hope we can at least have a moment to say Vanek would have been an elite scoring machine his whole career if he would have had a great center dishing hhim the puck.

I dont think so. Figure most goalies take 2-3 years form draft to nhl get a future nhl guy next year or year after then couple years later bingo. Darcy has drafted the position well.

i would think the ability to cut the angle and read the play is more important than any other ability a goalie can have.. obviously you can't be a slug but you have to have some brains to be a goalie.. Is your thesis available anywhere on line? i bet it is very interesting, i always have been more interested in the goalie side of the game

they might now the angles but i think the quickness of the brain and ability to read where the play is going makes a huge difference..

we have a few interesting prospects in Ulmark, Luiewen and Knapp... i think Knapp doesn't make it, Luiewen is nothing more than a back up and i haven't seen or heard much of Ulmark but he could be a sleeper from the draft.

Like myself seems the brain gets in the way of things. If you beleive your Dman is there to stop the ones around you and you can focus on the shooter you will do just fine. Think sometimes Miller doesnt trust some of the current d men.

maybe in the shoe size but i doubt it in goalie ability.... he needs a ton of work.. he had to fight to be a start in the NCAA last season as a senior.. he eventually won the battle and looked good but it will be a while if he makes it.

Always like a late round goalie flyer Ulmark could become great could be a minor league backup but you never know.
