how many do you need tho? there's briere, timonen etc. at some point guys like Giroux, Hartnell and Coburn have to step into that role as well, they've been around for some long playoff runs and suffered through important teammates going down, all the stuff that adds to the XP column. - JoeRussomanno
That doesn't mean we don't need older veterans too, and having them won't prevent our young star players from stepping up. It's all about the mix, variety is the spice of life. |

I did tag credit to him for that finals appearance yes, but evidently he was not involved of the running of the sixers. I don't know which one is true but it's starting to look like what he gets criticized for not doing with the Flyers he did with the sixers and still gets criticized, oh well. Just didn't think it was fair that someone in the media felt a shot at the best owner in town was warranted because the Sixers made a trade and actually got value for a change. - JoeRussomanno
I'm not a Basketball fan but if I was a Sixers fan I'd look at what's gone on under his watch and (factoring in that Croce was running the Sixers during the finals run) I'd be pretty bitter about what happened to my team.
I personally can't stand the man but I know when it comes to the Flyers on the rink we both want the same thing with the same level of passion. Unfortunately he wants as much of my money as he can pocket and I'd like to keep as much of my money in my pocket as I can so our interests diverge. |

I really don't care about how old a player is so long as he can contribute on the ice. I just get bored when it's debated that a seemingly over the hill player should be brought back and the old, "well he's great in the room" line comes up. That's great make him a coach. Oh wait what we do have those to begin with for? |

It's easier to run a union when the players care what's in the CBA as much as they care about missing a pay check. They blew up their own union during the lock out then did such a great job of recognizing what had gone wrong that they blew it up two more times within a year.
They had no chance of getting anything done in the last CBA. It was disheartening to see how easily they were manipulated both internally and by the League. - mayorofangrytown
yep. nhlpa was anything but in union in 04-05. it's really hard for the owners to get painted in a good light in labor negotiations, but the PA made it really easy in that one. |

I don't mean to offend, but in short I think you're overlooking the value of giving these young guys an experienced teammate who's accrued a long resume of hockey experiences, to make them an equal to a fixture in the league. I'm playing the 'agree to disagree' card.
EDIT: If we're talking about Jody Shelley in specific here, I would prefer a player who can give more on the ice while bringing the same presence. |
