Riddle me this:
How come people seem infatuated with splitting up the Coburn/Grossmann tandem? That was by far their best pair in the second half! |

I understand not wanting a weak group, but by breaking up two strong groups you make two groups weaker and one stronger..
Coburn-Grossmann
Timonen-Schenn
MaB-Gervais/Gusty
is how I think it should be. |

I wouldn't be surprised to see them try him on the 2nd unit strictly because he's a righty and he's got a cannon.
But as you said, I dont think that'll be one of their main objectives. I see them focusing on the intangibles you listed above first and foremost. However, this could be something they experiment with at one point in the season for sure. - mochoson
I could see it being something they work on in practice and eventually experiment with, but I'm not about to get my hopes up when it comes to L Schenn's offense. |

I hear that, I would just hate to "waste" Coburn as a #5 D man. This team just has too many #5,#6,#7 D man. I guess overall I am just not comfortable with the D in general on this team as it stands. Hope I'm wrong.
Edit what about:
Coburn/ Schenn
Timonen/Gervais
Grossman/ MAB/ GUS
I still feel uneasy. - coffee junkie
I do like this better, but Kimmo will play major minutes regardless of what we say.
Last year MAB & Gus were paired with Vets. Carle was paired with MAB and helped him along and gave him confidence (like Kimmo & Coby, Pronger & Carle). They were playing 20 minutes by the end of the year. If we bunch up our Veteran D into 2 pairs we don't build the Rookies Confidence and we tire out our Older players. I'm not saying we don't throw out Coby & Grossman when games are tight but we need to use our youth's legs if we are going to be in any position come playoffs.
In my mind for this lineup to work, this has to be in part a teaching year. We have to invest in Gus, Gervais & MAB giving them significant time paired with a Vet against top opponents or we should just sign Rozival, Coliaccovo or some other UFA. |

Oh agreed, I don' t think anyone's expecting him to become a 1st unit guy. But he has got a cannon of a shot (though VERY inaccurate) and has been on a Toronto team that has not had to have him develop offensively because he was behind better offensive defensmen. Just like JVR who never needed to play Center with us because of a glut at the position, but on Toronto where they are weak there, he has that opportunity to grow. It's the same thing with Schenn and why I think this trade was actually good for both teams and players. We have more room for Schenn to grow as a player, and Toronto has more room for JVR. |

I haven't so much heard accuracy is an issue (though I also haven't heard it's a strength) so much as release. Apparently, he really telegraphs it in, leaving plenty of time for a dangerous poke check. Regardless, I'm excited to see L Schenn, I think he takes advantage of his clean slate. |

I think a big part of playing the point on the PP, is handling the puck and making the right decisions with the puck. I don't see that as being part of his game at this point. I think the best thing they can do with Luke Schenn is let him be what he is. And that's a physical defensive defenseman. But we'll see how the Flyer look at it.

Looking for balance and avoiding playing 2 rookies on the 3rd pair.

Bourdon had two games in the 7 games at the end of the Season, when he came back from injury, where he played 12 and 13 minutes respectively. Andreas Lilja also played 20 minutes in a game in that same stretch of games.
