Bill, I thought he was obligated to sign by December 1st under the current CBA regulations or couldn't play the year. I just find it interesting, the Preds won't give him one considering almost all "star" players receive one. Just a really quirky situation from beginning to end.

It almost makes you believe the Preds want the option to trade him as opposed to keeping him long-term. Certainly for the kind of money, it is easy to say Weber should be fine playing wherever. However, I can understand him wanting a NTC added.

If I'm the Preds, there's no way I give him any kind of NT/NMC. I want to avoid the possibility of a Dany Heatley/Rick Nash situation.

Those clauses are really "There's no (frank)ing way you're trading me to Columbus" clauses.

I understand the reasoning by the team, but do those situations arise because the player is a problem child or the organization's inability to add talent to make them competitive?

Could be both. Nash wasn't really a problem child. He got tired of losing after a decade of inept management. But his list really messed things up for Howson and Patrick when it came time to move him out

I realize i can be a simpleton, but can a no trade clause be included in an offer sheet? If so then why wouldn't the Flyer's have pre-empted that?

Correct, he has until Dec 1. If he doesn't, the Preds could toll the season and he'd obligated to play year one of the new deal next season.

Yes, most stars get NTC/NMC contracts, but then again, most of them negotiate the deal with the team directly. From my point of view, why would -- or should -- the Preds give him a NTC when they are under no obligation to do so and never agreed to one in the first place? That was part of the "risk" of signing an OS to collect $26 million within 11 months, whether via the Flyers or Predators.

Perhaps as a conciliatory gesture, the two sides will ultimately work out a limited NTC where Weber can be asked to provide a list of 10 teams or some such. But, either which way, whenever the season starts, I'd be shocked if Weber still hasn't signed his contract over the lack of the NTC he wants.

No, there can't be a no-trade clause in an offer sheet. Allegedly, the Flyers had a verbal agreement with Weber to amend the final contract to include one if the Predators did not match the offer.

Once the Preds matched, it became up to Nashville whether or not to add a NTC to the final contract.
