This is the only thing that is a bit off for me, that Hall will never be an RFA. I think the Oilers gave up too much on the length, and risk some years later if Hall decides he wants to test UFA. If the contract is shorter, the Oilers still have control of the situation for contract #3. - 1970vintage
We got him for the next 8 years... Worry bout that then.

Fair enough, just that I think management earned short term security at the cost of long term. |

He hates waffles. Mainly because they got more ice time than he did |

Something tells me that had the Oilers taken Seguin we would hear how Hall is better and Seguin is learning how to lose.
Just a hunch. - robin_steele264
That kind of treatment is reserved for players on the Leafs and Canucks.

If Nashville had signed Weber to a contract long enough to get him to UFA rather than a short contract, and then the one year arbitration award, he would be a Flyer. That's all I'm saying. Not that Hall will leave, because clearly he wants to stay, but when this contract expires he will be in his prime and have all the power. |

Sure. But if in 8 years time Hall wants to go it's probably because we haven't done anything as a team. There would be no way to keep a player 11+ years into a rebuild if they wanted to go. I don't think there's anything wrong with putting an 8 year clock on our guaranteed Hall time. 8 years should be enough time for nearly any team in nearly any circumstance to go from dead last to Stanley cup champion. I don't think you can ask for much more insurance than 10 years with a 1st overall pick under contract. |

Rick Nash says hi.
In all seriousness, I applaud the Oilers for being proactive and getting their first first overall locked up, I just think they gave up too much on the term, only my opinion. |

Yeah, I think there's no question that Columbus blew it though. They blew their chance to build out from what turned out to be a franchise player. I can only hope that Hall gets as good as Nash, and that we actually do something while he's here. If we don't though, our mistake will have been not building properly, not that we didn't lock him up for long enough. |

They still have control...they just need to be smart about it.
Not like Nashville. If he isnt signed to an extension by TDL the year he expires, then he gets traded. |

Unless you're in the hunt to challenge for the cup...
There are a lot of variables. All I'm saying is that in my opinion, the Oilers gave up too much term for a player coming of his ELC. You might think 8 years is long term, but I could consider it medium term, putting Hall right in his prime earning years. My point about Nash was that even when you think you have security (in years) you still have to put everything else together to keep your players happy. |

And a failure to do that in the span of 8 years outstrips a failure to lock up Hall for a longer term by such a degree that it's barely worth talking about anything else. If they can't build a competitor in the next 8 years, that's the only thing that matters. The only real screw-up. |

Yes, the stat is called "wins" - A_SteamingLombardi
So because Seguin played on a better team who got more wins that means he had higher production against harder competition? Makes perfect sense |

If they are in the hunt for a cup in that final year, then obviously the team will be doing great and he would most likely want to stay and work out a deal. |

I don't have any issues with the term or salary of Hall's contract, good signing for the Oil.
Re those who think it's too high, it's a sign of the times. With the lack of player movement throughout the NHL becoming rather extreme, teams are desperate to lock in the talent they do have for lengthy spells. |
