As far as Doan goes, especially after seeing the reported offer, I can firmly say that there's no way in hell I would do it. That being said, if they did end up landing Doan for that money, I'm not sure I can bring myself to be too mad about it. |

From the last thread:
If you offer sheet O'Reilly anything less than $5 million and he accepts, Colorado will match with 100% certainty. The reason they're not offering it is because they want to pay him less, and while there is no offer sheet out there, the Avalanche have all the leverage. Why would you pay a guy $5 or $6 million per year when you can possibly get away with paying him $4 million? If another team, be it Buffalo or someone else, comes in and and gives him an offer sheet, the Avalanche lose their leverage, and then they have no choice to pay him. Look at what the Flyers offered Shea Weber. They had to structure the deal so that, at the very least, it would hurt the Predators if they matched it, and make it tempting to walk away. Look at what the Oilers offered Vanek, and then Penner. In order to successfully poach a restricted free agent, you have to offer a contract that tows the line of absurd. - buffalofan19
Flyers did the Predators a favor. The reason Weber signed the offersheet was because
A) He wouldnt have a problem playing in Philadelphia
B) He wasnt going to get front loaded $ from Nashville.
Him signing the contract got him a long term deal in Nashville but with front loaded money. The Flyers almost get a player that would make them a really dangerous team, but Nashville and Weber get what they want in the end.
When all things are said and done, Nashville did well to keep two of their big three players who had the potential to leave.
Much like the O'Reilly situation and what you have said, the Avs are trying to do a deal on their terms because they hold the cards right now (much like the Ennis situation). If a team comes in and forces their hand, they will play ball. Until then, why pay the ceiling when you dont have to. |

Plus in hockey, the only goal is to score goals. If you start sandbagging, things get harder on and pucks start going in your net. In football you can drag ass on offense on purpose. |

I cant think of any big market teams who have tried to bury a 35+ contract with the terms associated with Doan.
Even Pronger in Philiadelphia was for 2.5M less per season and he is one of the best defensemen of his generation.
Huge risk for a reward that is very far from certain. Perhaps if the G&G boys were 2 years further along in their development and Armia was ready to join the club in the event the Sabres moved somebody like Vanek to make the cap room.
I think the timing is off and I think that the investment is way over the top.
Does this make the Sabres legit contenders? In my opinon it does not, that is the only way you can justify paying Doan that money. The Sabres arent quite in the position yet to make that splash move that is the final piece. They need to hold back and let things play out. |

"The Sabres arent quite in the position yet to make that splash move that is the final piece. They need to hold back and let things play out."
Totally 123% right.
Forgive me for being reduntant, but Sabres fans are enamored with the idea that we are now perpetually in the running for any player available. We don't care about the kill, we care about the thrill of the chase. Then, like last season, we wonder why it isn't working out. I know injuries were a factor, but I'm just sayin. |

I think he does.
The sabres are lacking leadership. He provides it. Saw him play some last year watched the playoffs he looked good. If there not contenders now then when. Three years from now Pommer is in his 30's free agent miller is past his prime and Vaneks a 30 year old FA. The time is now. They have a good D. A good goalie.
with doan really solid up the wing. I wiil take that over same old same old. |
