So according to Darren Dreger the cap proposal from the owners would be a fixed cap over the 6 year term. It would no longer be calculated by revenue. Any future increases would be handled in escrow with the owners pocketing the first 10% of revenue growth annually before the players see an additional penny.

There's no perfect system, but I do like the flexibility of the luxury tax system.

I also like the parity that comes with the salary cap.

Not sure I'm willing to lose another year to try to change from one system to the other, though.

Emphatically concur.

Six years now? The first owner's proposal was only five.

These complex negotiations are slow-moving. At least they're at the table and talking.

I took it to the tune of nearly 30%. Overall company gross is down 10% over the same time period. Work force was also cut by 20%. Insurance coverage cut. Hmmmmmm... wonder where that money is going?

What? The owners daughter had a Paris wedding? Nice new Caddy @sshole... Thanks for using the recession to your advantage.

I'm sure it will start to "trickle down" any day now.

I've already heard rumors from my sources that they are looking to trade him for Alexei Zhitnik.

I dropped mine at the end of the season after 20+ years. I couldn't give tickets away last season. I sold pairs for a case of beer. Too much wasted money. The fringe fan is gone. They spend their money on Phillies tickets now.

Bettman wants to make more than his current salary which I believe is $8m per year.

I am pretty sure they won't pull that before he gets here.

By cutting back the player's share of HRR. That would effect the salary midpoint, which affects the cap; but doesn't have to affect current player salaries.
- bradleyc4

There has to be a mechanism that get's teams that would be already over the new Upper Limit. There has to be a rollback in salaries to do so.

Buyouts?

(Should that be two words? I'll need an official ruling.)

- bradleyc4

They aren't going to make teams that are over the Cap, buyout thier top players to get cap compliant.

I'd start first with thinking that the $58 million number is a starting point, not the endpoint, in the owner's proposal.

Also, I don't think too many -- outside of the owner's group -- believe that their proposal is feasible.

- bradleyc4

The owner's proposal is all about making the player's pay for the increased revenue sharing by lowering their salaries.

I'd rather see guys play than not. Obviously excepting cases like Timonen, who would likely benefit from time off.
- Jsaquella

I'd like to see it too especially the younger ones who can benefit while continuing to develop.

How does that lower a player's Cap hit?

Can't you lower their cap hit without lowering their salary?

You would have to somehow change how a Cap hit is figured. Regardless, there has to be some mechanism for teams to get at or below the new Upper Limit.

Even if they were grabbing money by the fist full from escrow (which seems to be the plan in the first three years) that doesn't happen until the end of the year and couldn't factor into the salary cap when the season opened.

Well I'm sure the NHLPA will reject this offer so we get to have a whole new slew of unanswered questions in a week to 10 days.
