AHL living legend Denis Hamel once had, I believe, 50 goals, 100 points and 339 penalty minutes in the same junior season.

So NHL.com had a pretty good idea for an article.. They posted the top 10 best captains in NHL history.

Oddly enough, #7 is Sidney Crosby.

If you had to list the top 10 captains of all-time... who would you choose?

Messier (didn't read the article but it was a natural choice)

No idea why Crosby, Doan or Bourque made the list.

Messier would be on there, although I think he's overrated. How many times did the Rangers make the playoffs after he returned from Vancouver? How many Canucks fans feel he's a great leader? Yzerman would be there, too, although prior to 1997 many questioned his leadership.

Biggest omission? Scott Stevens. Flyers fans hate the guy, but he was an excellent captain

Nothing to do with whether Crosby is a good Captain or not. But I don't think a player who is what, 23? Should be on any NHL top 10 list in history at that point. Too early in his career.

Would you put him ahead of K. Primeau in terms of best captains of all-time?

Well Messier could score in the playoffs so I guess I'd grudgingly have to.

I will say this, for one season, Keith Primeau was the best third line center in the NHL which is no mean accomplishment for the third overall pick.

Denis would have had many more productive years in the NHL had he not wrecked his knee when first called up to the Sabres. A real shame.

I think that's a good way to look at a guy like Taylor Leier. Generally, if you're going to be a star in this league, you'll put up big junior numbers as a 16 or 17 year old. But just because Leier hasn't done so, does not mean he can not become an effective NHL player; just eliminates the possibility of being a star player (unless he's an extremely rare late bloomer).
- bradleyc4

On the flip side of that argument, even NHL-level role players and even many of the "no-talent" goons were big point producers at the major junior level at 16-17 -- Riley Cote was a WHL scoring force, and Talbot had Giroux-esque Q numbers -- so it's pretty rare to see guys who struggled to dominate as a teenager pan out to be decent NHLers in the end.

I think calling Riley Cote a "scoring force" is a bit of a stretch. Didn't reach the 20-goal plateau until his age 19 season.

The maturity differences between a 17-year-old and a 19-year-old -- both physically and mentally -- vary much greater than a 2-year gap between players in the NHL. This leads to late teens posting better numbers in juniors than they would against a team of players their own size (generally speaking).

not sure its the smartest move now, but the kid is an absolute monster on and off the ice. Should make for a hell of a leader.

Stastny, O'Reilly, and Erik Johnson seemed to be next in line... getting passed over for a 19-year-old is a bit of a slap in the face to them, no?

He's more mature than me, and I'm twenty years older. Bold move for sure.
