DD complements Cole and Pax very well because he is somewhat unpredictable (or versatile if you prefer) as a playmaker.

He does not keep pulling off the same moves like Plek does.

I wish I could remember the site where they had all the line combos and their stats, but Pleks played on that line for a few games while DD was out and he did very well.
To the point where DD came back quicker than anticipated.

Cole played all his career with Staal (great player isn't he?) and never scored more than 26 goals (except for 2 years when he scored 29 and 30).
Now that he is past his prime, he plays with DD and scores 35!
