it is a must on some foods(Caesar salad, most pastas, potatoes) imo same as salt is on certain food though I've cut back a lot of salt since I was a kid.

Tip: Don't use it on pop tarts, donuts, or danish and you should be fine. Might have been the problem with your pepper use in your salad days.
