Missed the general point. Yes the players could make more than they have in the past but it would be less than their current deal. Either way its worse for them at the end of the day.
I'll paint a different picture. Say your in sales and you make 5% commision. You have an amazing year make the company tons of money. They don't like how much ur commision check is so say next deal we only gonna give you 4% commission. You honestly going to be like that's cool I'll sell more and can make even more than last year. That may be what u do, but admit it you wouldn't be happy about it. And if it happened repeatedly you would try some form of protest.
Why should the playerrs be any different?
Yes the players can play elsewhere, close to 200 already have. But that point is not as valid when ur discussing up rooting families thousands of miles. So ur example of working elsewhere isn't really comparable either with averaage joe commuting extra 30 min lol - sfarrell
No. You're missing the point. Taking a 5, 10, 15% pay cut based on millions of dollars is much easier to swallow than someone having to do that making 50G/year.
Get real.

No it's not! It is impossible to go to an immediate 50/50 and honor all existing contracts. Someone isn't paying attention. |

Technically speaking, paying out a pro-rated contract, as per conditions outlined and agree to in a new CBA, would be honouring existing contracts. |

how would trading 2 players make my teams "full of prospects".. I'll still have 21 (developed) other players who may not be "stars" but still welcome on any team in the league - conor_smythe
Do I have to explain that? really?
Um ok, Mike Fisher and Martin Erat are not filling that stadium. and yes many teams would take them, for their second line, not to sell jerseys and fill seats in the stadium. |

Who said anything that the "contracts would be "honored immediately." 50/50 is wanted immediately.
At the end of the day the players would receive every penny that they're owed in their contracts... HENCE, HONORED! |

In the Real World that everyone wants to talk about. You get paid commensurate with your skill level. Commensurate with what you can do for your Company. You make 52K a year, because that is all your worth to your Company. And if you could command more of a salary, you would do so. Players make the money they make for a reason! But they should give up what they have and take less, because Joe Schmo is struggling to get by in the Real World? |

211M make whole the first 2 years was there to cover the 57 to 50% over 5 years. Year 3, 4 and 5 it was the leagues revenue that are supposed to go up (7% annually the players say) and cover the 7% drop overall in % |

and as for "over priced developed stars = competing in the league"
take a look at the chicago blackhawks stanley cup roster/payroll
Better yet, take a look at the ST.louis Blues current payroll and Standings last season.. you don't need overpaid superstars to compete - conor_smythe
Toews, Hossa, Seabrooke and Keith, all olympians, Sure no stars.
St.L Blues are struggling to sell tickets, bad example again. |

So couldn't a company decide that you aren't worth paying 57% of the company's profits, and really you are only worth 50%? |

Technically speaking, yes. But that hasn't happened. If the agreement reached is that the players take a 20% rollback, than that is that. But it's not been agreed upon to this point. |

Yes, but they can't apply that arbitrarily. They have to get the other side to agree to it. And really the best time for the NHL to have told the players what they are worth. Was during the individual player contract negotiations. |

The NHL said that existing contract money would be paid out in deferred payments. In other words, the contracts are... H-O-N-O-U-R-E-D! |

first of all, mike fisher sells a ton of jerseys. consider the city, his wife, and just look at the guy. Secondly, who says I have to trade for prospects? there's a ton of teams who would want Suter/Weber who would offer a good player with a good contract in return aka a "hockey-trade"
and whats wrong with undevelopped talent? kane and toews were 20 when they lead their team to a cup. are you saying that some team would offer 100 million to these guys, but nobody would be willing to part with an elite prospect? |

They would be honoring them according to the agreed upon CBA contract. If the players agree to something, then they live with the results. |

We've been over this a dozen times, MJL.
The players and agents were aware of a possible roll-back.
If you don't believe me, please refer to the Weber, Suter and Parise contracts.
Hint: look at the signing bonuses. |

Again, the NHL has stated that it would honour player contracts. |
