See my revised comment, I noted that you had clarified your remarks and responded to those instead.

Re: Pronger/Schenn, I don't recall all the particulars but part of that was the fact that Schenn had bonuses that had to become unachievable for him to fit into what cap space the Flyers had (which is why he started the season in the AHL), even after considering Pronger was on LTIR. Once that happened, the Flyers made a couple other moves and opened up all of the extra cap space.

Yea, just saw it.. you get my jist I think..

As for Pronger and Schenn.. Schenn was a bonus issue.. but combining that with Prongers cap hit still counting in the off season prevented us from spending about 5 million during FA. When the season started and he was sent to IR, and Schenns bonus fell off we were left with a ton of space.. but that wouldnt help us then as much as it would have during early UFA...

Why not with forced retirement (injury or hockey related issues) allow the player to be paid over the course of his contract, and not charge the team with a Cap hit. If the player were to attempt a comeback during his contract length, the cap hit must be reinstated. If he were to try a comeback AFTER his contract expired, his rights would be retained by the team he retired from for however many years he was out, unless that team forfeit those rights. This way a guy cant retire at 25 in CBJ, and hop in UFA with any team he wants. Or something along these lines. I completely agree teams will game the system.
- jak521

Simple example: Player A has a 5-year, $25 million contract ($5 million per) and gets hurt in Year 2 and it looks to be career-ending. Per rules, he gets paid while hurt and so he gets the rest of that $5 million plus the next $15 million. Two years after that contract otherwise expires, he comes back and says, "I want to try and play again." If his contract goes back in force, he picks up in Year 3 making $5 million like nothing ever happened.

Needless to say, teams won't want to do that. Trying to write rules to fix that creates a whole new set of problems, and the NHLPA would quickly step in to say, "if he's playing out the rest of that contract, he's doing it under the terms originally stated - you're not cutting his salary."

Speaking of gaming the system.. If teams try to circumvent the cap (and there needs to be a strict, active panel to investigate contracts like that) teams should be punished... draft picks & cash...
- jak521

You know ... like was specified in Article 26 (which deals with circumventions). Of course, that requires someone to actually enforce that. (Insert your own comments about the NHL's apparent refusal to do so here.)

I know this is completely off topic and frankly, I could care less.

I care just enough that I really could care just a little less.

What happened to SCOTT LAUGHTON? Wasn't he supposed to be a shoe-in for Team Canada at the WJCs? He's not even an invitee.

I understand that.. LTIR is just to reduce the total cap hit for a player who is not being used due to injury.

- jak521

LTIR doesn't reduce the total cap hit for a player who is not being used due to injury. LTIR is an exemption to go over the upper limit if replacing that player with player(s) puts you over the Upper limit. Up to the amount of the injured player.

It's the same thing. It's money outside the system and it would affect the Revenue split.

[url]I wonder if its a form of age discrimination.. honestly

So if a guy signs a contract that takes effect at 34- a 5 year deal- and retires at year 2 the club doesnt take the hit. But watch out.. 35 and the club is stuck. Makes no sense to me.

Anti flyer conspiracy. That or the ten game suspension had something to do with it.

He didn't make the camp because with the lockout the depth Team Canada has is so deep he wouldn't crack the top 4 lines even if he was moved to wing.

You have forwards like Jenner, Huberdeau, MacKinnon, Scheifele, Strome, Nugent-Hopkins (All centers & 2 of them are likely to move to wing) not to mention players like Drouin, Monahan, Graovac, Shinkaruk, Ritchie, Rattie, Lipon, Hudon etc to pick from for the team.

Laughton just didn't stand much of chance with far more talented players to select from.

It's deep. Canada is making some roster cuts tonight according to Mark Edwards

Cut from Team Canada:

Adam Pelech (Erie, Defense) - NY Islanders pick
Tyler Graovac (Ottawa, Forward) - Minnesota pick
Sean Monahan (Ottawa, Forward) - 2013 draft eligible
Derrick Pouliot (Portland, Defense) - Pittsburgh pick
Francis Beauvillier (Rimouski, Forward) - Florida pick

No more roster cuts tonight. 8 more will be cut tomorrow.
