I don't really see how. I think his value goes down a lot though if he has to sit for an entire year at his age. It suddenly becomes a big unknown what you are getting from a 35 year old with 9 years left?
Maybe the CBA will have an amnesty clause though, hmmmm. - Aetherial
Then you do see in different ways how his value is tied to negotiations. If we miss a year it could drop substantially, and if there is an amnesty clause it could rise. ( would Gillis tie a buyout to him resigning another deal? Say 5-6 years 4 mil?)
Regardless, it's hard to predict how much of a monkey on the back his contract will be when the dust settles. There is a strong possibility that league revenue will decrease following the lockout, lowering the cap ( and Lou's value ) even further. |

Well Ek, you got the meter fixed and wrote a truthful take on the situation. Almost everybody has the opinion that one side or the other is to blame. Both sides are complicit in this. |

i've never heard people complain about the devils first cup win. no one says there should be an asterisk beside it. - RealityChecker
Well, they have - but not because it was in a shortened season. They want the asterisk there because the Devils neutral zone-trapped their way to the Cup. |

I think I Predicted earlier... 300 million make whole, 6 year contract term, 8 for the teams own FA, and an 8 year CBA opt out after 6, so almost exactly what you said here. - Aetherial
i had a similar viewpoint.
however, i had variation on the contract length. 7 years for a player under 27, 6 years for anyone over up to 34. 3 year max for 35+.

I would say 5 to 34 (just to keep the contract to under 40 year olds)... but yeah 3 would be the absolute max for 35+
There has to be stuff about retiring or burying players in the minors don't yield cap relief. I really want to see the contract loopholes closed.

Ek, I agreed with most of what you had to say.
Except for one part in particular and it was this line:
"Perspective is lost when players are willing to hurt their own families and miss paychecks "
Maybe you need to get some perspective because these guys' families are SET! they could miss this entire season and they will still have huge mansions, beach homes, expensive cars, awesome restaurants to go to, etc, etc, etc.
Even the players who made league minimum salaries last year aren't hurting.
Stop pretending that these missed paychecks are hurting anybody. That's not the issue. It's principle thats issue in this whole thing. NONE of these guys are hurting for a paycheck to the point that its being selfish to their families. - gypsypunk92
you need to watch 30 for 30 Broke.
Just cuz a player earns a big paycheck doesn't mean he's not living outside of his means. there's a reason why the NHLPA issued players a $10,000 stipend a few weeks ago |

these negotiations are funny.
most pundits predicted a lockout. most pundits predicted a december deal.
it's pretty much playing out how people predicted and yet they're still shocked at the daily events. |

The only problem with this is that you let a 34-year old have a contract out to 39, but the 35-year old can only go out to 38. Either the 34-year old should stop at 38, or the 35-year old should go out to 39.
See my 3-tiered idea (I know we've discussed it) for how to smooth that out. |

This can't possibly be right; I've been told D. Fehr won't be around after this and it will be S. Fehr who will be appointed (by D. Fehr, not the players) to run the S.S. NHLPA.
On top of everything else you wrote, you forgot to mention the real problem here: nothing the two sides are working on constitutes a real long-term solution. It's like taking the guy who's shown up in the E.R. with a heart attack and a scrape on his head from falling and hitting the table, putting antibiotic cream and a band-aid on the scrape and pumping him full of adrenalize, and declaring "see, his heart is still beating - we've saved him!" All they've done is propose a bunch of band-aids ideas that fix nothing and potentially create other problems that we'll all recognize down the road.
And yet, no one has dared ask them about any of that. - Irish Blues
As long as the owners can keep coming back for more band-aids, I don't think they mind. I think this is a big part of the dynamic and a reason that players are looking to exact a significant cost on the owners. In their minds, they can't let this become too easy. |

I'm sure this has been said, but absolutely no player or owner truly cares what you say in your poorly written, non-sensical ramblings.
Even if you an an ounce of credibility with either side (which you don't) , both have made it clear they don't care about public or journalistic opinion. - champ1315

I know the owners don't mind. The players probably don't, either. The fans and the media, however, should - because as you point out, not getting this right means the owners get to cry "there's problems here, we have to re-do this again, and it's all the players fault so we're locking them out" and the players have yet another chance to go after the owners, and we all suffer as a result.
Fans and the media should be demanding better. Instead, they're demanding something be done for the sake of doing something so they can feel better. Whether the players have "... and make sure they know this won't be too easy so they won't do it next time" in their mind, I strongly doubt. I'd be surprised if they're not already formulating how they'll go after the owners when there's a next time. |
