How would you like to be an NHL player getting set for holidays?
Regardless if you are a Ford/Chevy guy, owner/player or lean left or right, here is where we sit right now and it really is this simple.
The owner/player direct meeting, which culminated in the meltdown a few Thursdays ago is where the players overplayed their hand.
Players and moderate owners had good faith negotiations and when owners made some concessions and believed the end was near, Fehr pulled Crosby and other pawns and moved the goal posts once again. That party foul or lack of negotiation decorum has backed players into the corner.
It is safe to say that it was a planned ploy hoping to get one more round of owner concessions. Instead they pushed to far.
I really believe now that the owners will sit and do nothing until the players (Spoiled children) stop stamping their feet and throwing tantrum and come down and face reality.
While there are a lot of labor lovers and people who hate the "man" as evidenced by the current political environment in the US. All emotion aside, you can not squeeze blood from a turnip. This issue is simple math. The players have to give owners enough/some incentive to own a team. I know JJ and others will point to leagues judgement errors in expanding to poor markets, but at the end of the day...that has created more jobs and total revenue growth.
Players betting owners fear losing more money, do not realize that their net loss will be the same with or without playing. More importantly, it is not worth owning a hobby that costs millions each year. Fixed costs are minimal. The largest expense items for teams is player salary and travel.
And if you lose teams, you lose hockey jobs. Again, insane.
So as the players stare at their wives at Christmas dinner or now as they finish their Christmas shopping.....how will those daggers effect these guys.

Depends, am I Corey Potter or am I Shawn Horcoff? - Lahey
Horcoffs stance astounds me! Yes he is likely set for life due to his years in the league earning more than he should, but he is still giving up $ 5 .5 million by not playing this year? How do you just scoff at throwing that away whether you already have $20 mill in the bank or not?

I don't know. It's tough to say. I can see where he's coming from though.
Not sure why so many people are mad at him for saying what he said.
At least he is being honest and trying to help the future players.
I know they are millionaires and should be thankfully, but you don't fight then you end up in a communist league(KHL). I actually have more respect for Horc now. Guy doesn't care about the money, but his teammates.

The only reason Horcoff is beaking off is to save his ridiculous contract from either being bought out or rolled back.

I really dont get the part about doing this for the good of the future players.
This whole thing is HURTING future players. It's hurting the league momentum in growth and revenue.
But when they comment that this is all about the transition to 50/50 over the next few years, then that just tells me that this whole " future players" arguement is total Bullpoop!

It's all about not being pushovers, because Fehr has probably made it very clear that next CBA guaranteed contracts are gone if the NHL gets their way.

At the end of the day it's still millionaires complaining that they don't make enough money and that their working condition aren't acceptable.
Look at Kyle Turris female doging about having to ride a bus for six whole hours - RichardHertz
Do you blame them though? You think they want to end up like the KHL?
That's why they fight, because at the end of the day they don't want to end up with a drunk pilot or have a kilo of left handed cigarettes planted on them when they go to the airport.

I doubt it. If they get 5 yr term length max then there is no real reason to go after gauranteed contracts.

There's always a reason to go after it. I hate to see how bad the 5 year deals are going to end up. I really think we'll start seeing more guys asking for the max salary per year, which is something we've yet to really see.

Canada should go to the WJC with the intent of drawing the entire Russian team into a brawl - like was done to the Canadians in 86/87... get them eliminated from their home tournament.
And the Canadian kids should wear the vintage 72 jerseys... with only one change "da da Kanada.. nyet nyet ... " on the bottom of rear of the jersey....
