Damien Cox reporting that the NHL has agreed to 2 amnesty buyouts that wouldn't count against the cap. That would add some real movement possibilities around the league.

But will he come over? That's the $64(USD) question. |

He can skate and shoot and appears to have a pretty fierce demeanor, willing to go hard to the front of the net. Plus, Russia uses him on both special teams, which is typically the mark of a smarter, skilled player.
Danault with the lone assist on Canada's only goal in 5-1 loss to the US. Did not see that coming BTW. |

I think Montador definitely. Other candidates: Olesz, Frolik
Might set up an interesting calculus of: "Oh,, so and so, was bought out, well if I want to go after him, then maybe I use one of my buyouts ona bigger salaried, higher profile player."
For the Hawks, it's dangerous because any of the $5million per plus guys they would buy out could come back to hauntthem later.

Tough loss for my Canucks this morning, makes today an even longer day at work.
I watched the majority of Canada's games and I felt the Hawks prospects Danault and McNeill played solid roles.
McNeill was unfortunately sat for almost the entire game this morning (I don't think for any specific reason, CAN just played with a shortened bench) but I thought he had a good tourney as 4th line centre and one of the top PK forwards. Also was very good on faceoffs.
Danault played a more significant role and it's pretty evident what a coach thinks of a player when they're the first one out the door for a penalty kill (even on 5-3), taking d-zone faceoffs and matching up against top lines. I'm wondering if he'll ever be a big scorer as a pro, he doesn't seem to have that top-end offensive skill but he does not EVER quit. He throws his weight for an average size player and is always in the right position defensively.
It's always nice to get an extended view of prospects as I personally don't have the luxury of watching them on a regular basis.

That wasn't a tough loss - they were soundly beaten by a better, faster, bigger team with vastly superior goaltending (for those who wanted the Hawks to draft Malcolm Subban). And the USA made very few mistakes and took no foolish, undisciplined penalties.

It won't ever happen but I might throw Patrick Sharp onto the list. I don't like that contract if the cap drops to $60 million when it is going to take a few years to build total league revenues. Sharp is a good team player but not at $5.9M per year. |

Do you think Frolik could be bought out before Olesz? Both guys have this season plus one more on their existing contracts, but Frolik's is for $791K less per season. Granted, neither player may be deserving of an NHL contract at this point, but at least Frolik can give a small return on the investment. With Olesz stuck in Rockford (when the season resumes) the Blackhawks get nothing in return for his salary. Also, Frolik may have some trade value to a team wanting to reach the cap floor given that he'll have only one season remaining after this one.

His passing is pretty good—very, very good for the junior level and I think some/most of that will translate to the pro level.

I think Hossa would go before Sharp does, but I don't think either is going anywhere.
I'm sure Stan can get under the cap in the short term, but my worry is what will happen in 2015 when Toews and Kane's contracts come due. We'll have a few contracts off the books by then (Bolland, Hjalmarsson and Oduya) but those guys will need to be re-signed or replaced. |

If the other rules are still in place Olesz could stay in Rockford. Rocky pays and he is content there it seems, especially now coming off another surgery to same knee. |

So 50/50 ? 60/40 there will be a season ?? Im kinda tired of waiting. My usual Hawks angst is now Lockout angst .... waiting for the hawks to make a trade... waiting for the hawks to sign some one...... waiting for the lockout to end..... |

If Cap goes to $65 mill not $60, my view is no one has to be bought out.
But the Hawks will have 6 players accting for about $35 mill in Cap space and....
The next guy in line is someone they put trade feelers out this past summer....Bolland, at least that is what I believe and now it makes more sense than it did in June.
If Danault comes up and Bolland is dealt the Hawks will save about $2 mill in cap space, considering they receive picks and prospects in return.

Agreed... the better team definitely won.
I would disagree that there was a vastly superior difference in net. Gibson is really really good but Subban had little to no support on some of those goals. He didn't see either of the first 2 goals as he was completely screened (5-6 guys in front of him on the first) and unless Gibson has x-ray vision he wouldn't have stopped those either.
I would quote Bobby Mac on this loss "a complete team failure" rather then put the blame solely on Subban. I still think he still has high potential due to his competitive nature to be the best, I think all those Subban boys install that same trait.

That defence is off the charts and yes Gibson is pretty darn good too. |

Proof in the pudding:
The resounding upset of Team Canada puts to rest any ideas that Strome Scheifele are NHL two way players.
Just check the plus minuses.
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins & Drouin are even +/- in a 5 -1 drubbing, as are the defensive players Danault McNeill.
The guys looking one way get blinders and shrug off their responsibilities defensively.
Too bad.
I am not trying to take away from the USA victory.
Very glad to see their scoring came from all over the line-up...

If there are TWO buyouts, you use ONE now and ONE for the veteran you acquired at the deadline whose huge contract is not one you want langusihing on the books..

Maybe...We are all spit balling at this point.
But StanBo will have big decisions to make...If Cap is $60 mill they would have about $25 mill to allocate for 17 players...

Amen to that Al. I had the pleasure of having Garret play on my rec team this summer before he went to Guelph.
Humble, hard working, all around good guy. he'll be a pro soon. |
