You don't think Big Ed is face palming the whole Bryz signing? I'm sure that the move wasn't Holmgrens. Desperately begging and pleading and overpaying for what he felt was a number one isn't his style.
If you look at it, under the current circumstances, Bryz is not worth the risk. With the cap going down you can't be handcuffed with that contract going forward on the chance he performs. If he had a year or two left you could swallow it but not 7.
Think about it this way, could you trade him? You can't. There's a reason for that. NO ONE WANTS HIM! Especially at that number for those years.
Ride out this partial season then buy him out. There are plenty of average goalies out there you can get for a fraction of the coast. Plus you can trade for a prospect or wait for Stolarz. There are always prospects stuck in depth charts. - mayorofangrytown
Henrik Karlsson is intriguing. Been stuck behind Kipper for so long. |

still prefer meh to Bryz (and that contract), tho - bradleyc4
I'd take Ray Emery back at this point but I'd hope Lou gets bought out and sign him for a couple years if he's reasonable. That's just me. I think a change of scenery could do him a world of good. |

If he is horrible this year, I expect yes, he will be bought out. Some want him never to play another game as a Flyer. I am just sick of the Leighton Boucher tandem type thing. It doesn't work. Personally, I've been advocating that we draft guys.. Subban Gibson types like that but that isn't what the Org does. If we can buy out Bryz and replace him with an established vet like Luongo on the cheap, I'd be ok. Bring in Tim Thomas or a retread vet, I want no part of it. |

You know, I love Ray, but is he completely healthy? would we get half way through the year and he have to retire a la Hackett? Luongo is better than Bryz yes, and I would take him here in a heartbeat at like 2 or 3 mil. but would he play here? |

That's my point. There's not a lot of options out there...So we just go with a meh and an average D and hope for the best? That's a recipe for missing the playoffs. |

To be honest, I don't think we contend with the current D regardless but a solid Bryz may mean a playoff berth. With Leighton or a Boucher type tandem, we miss the playoffs I'd say. Replace Bryz with a cheap tandem and draft high for a tender?
If we could replace Bryz for Luongo and sign him for 2 years 6 mil..I'd be all over it. |

But we played with just that last season and made the playoffs. There's a better than 50/50 chance the goalie we pick up for 2-3 mil will out perform Bryz.

I think this D corps is above average. If Timonen retires, though, he'll need to be replaced.
I'd rather go for the mediocre-to-average goaltender and get a nice replacement for Kimmo (if I had to choose). |

Bill,
Other than myself, do you have any favorite posters? Either on this thread or the Dallas thread?
Slightly related - who are your favorite (if any) hockey journalists, excluding your own work.
Hope you have a prosperous and healthy NY.

Because he's way better than any other option the Flyers have currently (i.e. Leighton, Hovinen, Heeter).
He wasn't given a job partially because CSKA already had a good goalie in Stana, and preferred to give the bulk of work as opposed to a guy who was going to jump ship if/when the lockout ended.
Holmgren traded for Schenn, a defensive defenseman. He will likely be a better defenseman than Kubina was.
A waste if he performs as he did for the 2-month stretch from mid-November to mid-January. If he performs like he did in the first month of the season or the last 3 months of the season, he's worth the money. - jmatchett
You'll quickly learn to ignore him |

I really think some people are selling Bryz short. He was great down the stretch, won a series vs Pitt where both D's were very porous and was the only reason we were even in the last 4 games of the NJ series. I'm just not sure we can replace him at 2-3 mil without a Pronger type #1 patrolling on D. I love Timo but he's gonna have to play monster minutes. Thank God it s a short season.

I love Timo but he was wearing down, and will continue to do so with more minutes now that Carle and Pronger are gone.. Mesz recovering and not sure he will be back to 100%.. that worries me. |
