I think there would be a difference in the timing though, no? I guess it also depends on what the terms in the contract are, which we dont know and will never know. There could be a clause in there that has this covered for all we know. - Gunslinger
NHL wants the CBA to expire June 30, NHLPA wants to keep it at Sept 15. so that kind of blows the whole "negotiating in bad faith" crap out of the water. |

As I said this morning, the tone of talks changed with disclaimer off the table as an option. Thus it is being brought back.
Larry Brooks @NYP_Brooksie
Belief within PA that Bettman/Batterman pulled bait and switch after initial disclaimer deadline passed. |

even though they knew it could be brought back 24 hours later? is anyone stupid enough to think that Bettman and Batterman didn't know this would happen? |

(frank) THE GREEDY PLAYERS AND THEIR PENSIONS!!!
The average NHL salary was $2.4M in 2011-2012.
The average Canadian's salary was $46K in 2012.
It would take 52 YEARS, more than half a century, for the average Canadian to earn what the average NHL player makes IN 1 YEAR (and that's basically for 8-10 months of "work").

According to some, it's not the players faults if they blow all their money on cars, whores, gambling, bad investments.....THEY MUST HAVE A PENSION PLAN.....they need to be protected for those bad days! |

How do you figure? NHLPA just wants chance to sign free agents on July 1st and prior to expiry of CBA in Sept, NHL doesn't want a repeat of last summer's flurry of signings under old CBA. Not sure what that has to do with 'negotiating in bad faith'. |

wtf would be the point of a 30% variance??? - muffin_man
It's actually not true.....
Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
On variance, NHL has proposed 60 per cent limit. Therefore, lowest salary of any multi-year deal must be within that amount of the highest. |

On a multi year deal, it greatly limits the front loading deals |

previous one was year to year, the new one is 60% from highest to lowest, makes more sense but the PA won't like it. |

well this explains my confusion. At least going from $10M in year one to $6M isn't horrible. Even on a 2 year deal that's not outside the realm of possibility for a smaller market team. |
