Give them 10 with an option of 7. Neither is going to be dumb enough to completely destroy their public image by exercising it anyways.

Both side are most certainly dumb enough.

I'm right there with you.

I got excited in early December with the all night meetings but that pretty much used the last of my energy over this process.

I just don't care anymore. If they do sign a new CBA then i'll be back watching and rooting for the Kings but if they don't then it's one less thing to think about until this time next year when they're still at it, or the NHL just folds. In that case I guess I just add the MLB to the sports I watch.

NFL, F-1 and Indycar

This is classic.

The NHLPA already did not have a leg to stand on with their disclaimer of interest.

And now they elect not to do it, and then threaten to do it again?

Bwaa ha ha ha ha.

Yeah, I guess no judge in the world would view that as a mere negotiating tactic.

Bettman is pissing himself. He's daring them to do it again.

@cotsonika: So wait. It was Don Fehr himself -- the bogeyman, salary-cap crusher -- who decided against disclaimer last night? Hmm.
- nayefj

Technically, it would have to be him - not the players - who would file a disclaimer of interest.

This is part of what makes it so funny - he got the players to vote on whether or not he could decide to walk away and no longer represent them.

It's so transparently a bargaining ploy, it's laughable.

Honestly, who would you buyout from the Leafs other than Komi.

I am not even convinced they would buyout Komi... a lot would depend on what they felt the needed the money to spend on?

On the other hand, Komi goes beyond this year and if the cap hits 60 or 65, you have to figure there will be *some* good players out there to spend money on.

So, yeah, Komi. I can't think of anyone else though.

- Aetherial

Actually I can see the leafs being a little more creative than that. Maybe something like. Komi to NYI and 4th for Dipietro and their 1st.

Or even something with Tampa for their 1st. They would love to get rid of Vinny, and can that afford to buy him out? Leafs could ... let him play for the shorten season and buy him out over the summer. If he wants to Bolt back to the Bolts for lesser - let him.

Rich teams can afford making moves like this.

? Do you understand this? I feel like I am missing context here. I am not sure what is being discussed.

Is the PA filing for a motion to dismiss the action the NHL filed, saying that the NY court has no jurisdiction?

I guess my question then would be, how can they hope to succeed. Where exactly IS there jurisdiction?

I think (wild guess) that this is asking the court to dismiss the NHL's pre-emptive strike that they filed in New York.

The formula remains the same folks..............
This season was always going to hang on the balance of a drop dead date. I fully expect negotiations to break down today or tomorrow, there will be press conferences and feet stomping and everyone is going to panic and think the season is toast..........They will take 3 days off and then give it one last chance to save the season.....which they will.......The new CBA will be agreed to on Jan 10th

Its been scripted this way since the start....we have one more "end of the world" press conference than we will have a deal

U really think Rogers and Bell are interested in calling that bluff??...Remember they are already losing a poop load of money from no hockey ...

This is going to explode and the result will be a much smaller league when the dust settles..

My question now is... where *is* there jurisdiction? I really can't see this being successful.

I don't think Rogers and Bell care that much, to be honest.

The last lockout and subsequent imposing of a salary cap meant record profits (note: that's different - and better than record revenues) for MLSEL. So in the end, missing a season was worth it.

And they don't fear contraction, either. Hell, it helps them out. Less weak sisters means less teams to prop up. They still get 45 home dates a year, whether there are 30 teams or 24 or 20.

This +100

Assuming there is a deal, it definitely will not happen until the very last second possible. Key word is "if" a deal happens
