Whether the players feel warm and fuzzy about Gary won't be a factor. Really depends how power shakes out w/in ownership group over next few years. Will league get back on big revenue growth again? Will bottom feeder teams start to make money? Those are Gary's issues going forward. - Canada Cup
I never liked Gary...Hockey is a different animal than the other sports...Close knit family type bonds and Bettmen is an outsider that doesn't fit and never will fit in and belong... |

Most of the players playing in the NHL in 2019-20 season wont care about the pay lost this year...
U understand this right...
They are fighting for the future as well man ,a bad deal for the players now could end up losing them Billions down the road....

At the end of the day he will be judged by what he won by giving up the October offer.
So far, he is WAY in the hole. This is especially true when you consider what the PA could have gotten in contracting stuff if they gave up make whole in October.
- Lose 300 million in make whole + get your contracting concessions, at least as good as now + the 800 or so million they lost in salary + don't damage the game so you earn more later.
Unless Fehr can get them something to justify all the loss (hint: he won't). Then this "long term" argument is a bunch of crap.

I think what will happen is this...... Gary sold the owners the idea that they will be able to rape the PA again. Owners bought into this, since they "thought" they did well back in 05/06.
Once the dust settles, the owners, at least the big club owners, will realize that Gary has created a toxic environment and there won't be labour peace unless the owners get a new commissioner. They need a reset.
I'm predicting that reset is going to end up being Burke. |

Since that's the case we all need to accept what it is since the issues they are fighting about are complex and take time to iron out...Both sides could have averted a lockout if they would have worked on the major issues over the course of last season...Evidently that requires trust on both sides which apparently there isn't any... - Flyfreaky
In my opinion, that's wishful thinking. This was always headed for a lockout. Regardless of when talks had started.

Burke? Interesting idea.
At this point, I really don't know. I don't think anyone knows exactly how the owners feel about Bettman at the moment.
One thing we DO know is that some "dove" owners walked away absolutely disgusted with PA/Fehr. If they alienated the mildest owners, then Bettman may not be a bad guy in the owners eyes.
Why I think you might be right though is just the "need for a change". Bettman executes the owners' will, and people who blame him are ridiculous, but at some point the optics need to change. |

Its all a big farce and doesn't matter. Why? Because agents and owners will figure out a way to overpay again. No matter how carefully they think they craft this CBA, someone somewhere will find a way to exploit it. |

Not gonna disagree due to the lack of trust between the parties...When you don't trust the people your dealing with you're already starting 10 feet behind the 8ball... |

Exactly. The optics need to change. He's been in charge for 20 years. A fresh face is needed just for the sake of change.
Even if its just an illusion. |

There is no way the players were going to agree to CBA that drops their share to 48% in last three years of deal. That 48% becomes starting point for next CBA. |

You're right. There was never going to be any trust once the players decided they weren't going to roll over and let Bettman write the CBA for them. Fehrs tactics have pissed off the owners and annoyed fans but he had the overwhelming support of his clients. - Canada Cup
Exactly. Fehr has been chosen as the scapegoat and called a lot of things. But if you talk to the people who have dealt with him, he is a straightforward and honest hard nosed negotiator who believes in his cause, and fights for his clients. |

Exactly.... you have to fight the fight now, Otherwise your already in the hole for the next battle. Its not about this year. Its about the future negotiations.
MLB went through this a number of times before the owners realized that you had to have labour peace in order to move forward. |

Certainly Bettman is culpable in all of this. But he's not alone. The hardline Owners such as Jacobs, along with Proskauer Rose and Bob Batterman. All in bed. The NHL needs to get their act together. And the first step in my opinion isn't to get rid of Bettman. But it's to get rid of Batterman and Proskauer Rose.
