Best thing he did was hire John Collins from NFL as VP, who helped max out revenue potential from on-line, Winter Classic, etc. Fact remains that the uneven nature of the revenue growth is his Achilles heel given cap/floor system. - Canada Cup
And now they want to limit the Large market teams to try and prop up the small market teams. Solid strategy. They have their head up their asses. |

Okay, lets reasonably analyze the growth of the NHL. For what do you feel Bettman can be credited for?
I'll start. He got the owners lots of money through expansion. That said, how much did the owners have to give back to prop up the Coyotes the past few years? - faceto27
Again, there is no sense getting into the p*ssing match in specifics.
The fact is, you can't blame him for everything bad, and give him no credit for anything good, and then explain why his employers have obviously been very happy with what he has done, to date. It makes zero sense.
The same PA that hates him so much has seen their salary grow TENFOLD and an increase in the size of the union during his tenure.
Has their never been teams/franchises that struggled in other sports? The NFL for instance? |

NONE of the criticisms explains how come the owners have clearly been happy with his work for a very long time and rewarded him handsomely.
He has done a job that his employers have been happy with. Arguing that is silly. WE ARE NOT his employers. The owners are. It is their decision alone whether he has done a good job.

I can only dream of a day when Donnie and I can run barefoot on white sandy beeches hand in hand, my tongue in his mouth, his tongue in mine. I will some day be the other father of his children. I love Donald Fehr and I'm not ashamed of that. - MJLjr

Yes, there have been many teams that have struggled. These are the teams that came in as expansion teams under Bettman.
When Bettman started as commissioner, the league had already expanded by three teams to 24 starting with the 1991–92 season, and two more were set to be announced by the expansion committee: the Florida Panthers and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, who would begin play in 1993–94.[15] Led by Bettman, the league focused expansion and relocation efforts during the rest of the 1990s on the American South, working to expand the league's footprint across the country. The Nashville Predators (1998), Atlanta Thrashers (1999), Minnesota Wild (2000) and Columbus Blue Jackets (2000) completed this expansion period, bringing the NHL to 30 teams. In addition, four franchises relocated during the 1990s under Bettman: The Minnesota North Stars to Dallas (1993), the Quebec Nordiques to Denver (1995), the Winnipeg Jets to Phoenix (1996) and the Hartford Whalers to North Carolina (1997
Also, I found this....... this was Bettman's mandate when hired by the owners.
The owners hired Bettman with the mandate of selling the game in the U.S. market, ending labor unrest, completing expansion plans, and modernizing the views of the "old guard" within the ownership ranks.[14]
Ending labour unrest? He made it worse.
Selling the game in the U.S............. the league went years without a viable tv contract in the US
Completeing expansion plans........ that he did. Much mixed results.
Modernizing the views of the old guard. Give him props for that |

I think times have changed though and its better to move on. All the examples of the positives he has done for the league are in the past. Since the last CBA didnt fix anything, maybe even made things worse cant be good for him. I also dont think all the owners share the same opinion on him. He cant be fired without a majority vote so to say they're all pleased with him because he still has his job is simply not true.
You think the bigger market teams are happy that the league has had to prop up the Coyotes, especially when he blocked the team from being sold to billionaire Ball Silly? |

Honestly, I did not even read.
Bettman's employers have been happy with him. They own the league. They decide whether he has done a good or bad job.
You just can't argue that.
How have the players fared under his tenure? Are you going to argue that they have fared poorly? |

I suspect he will be gone.
I think it will be a "goodwill" gesture from the owners to the players; just my guess. |

I was just wondering who would be the next NHL commish.
I don't think Burke has the experience the owners will want. He has their respect though, and the players' respect for the most part. |
