I feel bad for them too. Lots of people impacted by the lockout that nobody thinks about. I must admit though, having worked as a program/ice cream seller at Maple Leaf Gardens and Skydome, most but not all, are teens with part time jobs not making much anyways. The job was so part time and so low paying, that it would never be an income I would depend on as means of supporting myself. Alot of the people I knew working there just loved the job because you were always in the stadium/rink and part of the action as much as the money being made.

Especially Maple Leaf Gardens! Back then, guys would enter from the side street (I believe it was Wood? Maybe Carlton? Its been too long) and there would barely be any security. We would get there early, get autographs, talk to players with hardly any restrictions. The good ol days.

After we sold out programs and ice creams, which would be around the 2nd intermission/early third period, we would go to the ushers we knew who would tell us of any seats that were empty all game so we could sit there and watch the rest of the game. It was great, but only if you're young and income wasnt your main and only priority.
Then again, times have changed since the 20 years ago it was when I worked there.

I doubt many of the arena workers do that full time but if you need to work 2 or 3 jobs to get by and you take away one of the jobs, you could be completely screwed.

If it was in the proposal given to the NHLPA, then it isn't trying to hide anything.

Plus its hard having it as a 2nd and 3rd job because the days of work are so random its hard to make it for all the games anyways, and to have other employment.

Again, I do feel bad for them, but lots of people face job loss and cut hours. Not saying its not sad, but the NHL/NHLPA are not the first, last or only to do it. Its just the way of the landscape of employment. If the betterment and health of the company you are working for is in question, then it has to also be whats best for the employees at all levels. Cant fault them for that.

They should be glad they had the jobs at all because of these two sides, especially the business men that run/make it all happen, and that there will eventually be jobs for them to go back to. Perhaps a better workplace should their company be healthier, more profitable and in better shape.

They have a lifestyle to keep up... There is a reason many of these guys go broke after retiring... Player making 500k takes home in 6 yrs 1.8m, it's Pocket change if you think about it... they need to make enough money for a lifetime.

Or they'll get hired as faces for brokerage firms or dealerships.
NOTHING stops these guys from working after hockey.

You're right but the issue I have with the NHL/NHLPA is that this was completely avoidable and nobody should have been screwed over in the first place (including the fans).

Nothing stops anyone from finding other employment once they leave their respective jobs. I dont think that is a reason to not look after yourself, and make sure your getting paid as much as you can with as many benefits as you can get. I dont think pay total should factor into this. Rights are rights, and doing whats best for yourself and your family is what anyone in every walk of life would/should do.
