You're right but the issue I have with the NHL/NHLPA is that this was completely avoidable and nobody should have been screwed over in the first place (including the fans). - NickTheKid87
I dont disagree there. But its the real world. Here in Toronto, garbage collection has been cut off due to labour disputes. Now teachers are close (i believe) to striking/walking off the job.
Its a sad reality, but it is a reality that people need to accept, right or wrong. Employers/Employees have to take care of their best interests too. |

One of the problems with athletes after they retire is that those who don't work continue to live with the same expenses they have when they were bringing in over $1 million a year. That's something that these players don't realize or can't adjust to. - NickTheKid87
I'm guessing the ones with half a brain invest the majority of their net income... However the dumb ones can't help but spend it all...
Latrell Sprewell... Last year of his career made approximately $15 million. He turned down a 3 year $30 million extention from the T-Wolves claiming he "got family to feed" and calling the deal "insulting".
He's now bankrupt. |

THROW some MORE FUEL ON THE FIRE GARRY
Gary Bettman infuriated players across the table from him at NHL headquarters on Thursday — and, by extension, NHLPA membership — by claiming that a number of general managers had told him they regret some of the contracts they’d previously handed out and would welcome the opportunity to “dismantle” their teams in order to meet the steep drop to the league’s proposed $60 million cap for 2013-14, sources have told The Post.
The players responded with a mixture of anger and skepticism, demanding to know the identity of these alleged GM’s. Bettman refused to name the straw men in seeking to counter the players’ position that adopting a $60M cap — even with two amnesty buyouts — would be punitive against big-market, big-spending franchises.

I think the only real issue, my opinion only, is that many of them are kids when they come into this money and dont really comprehend how to handle/deal with having that much money and attention thrown their way. Its a mentality and lifestyle that the average person cant understand or relate to.
I dont feel bad or have sympathy for millionaires who go broke, but I have a soft spot for the guys who dont end up millionaires and make a good chunk of money (lets say 800k after taxes and agent/lawyer fees) for a couple of years then are thrown away at a still young age ( i consider early to mid 20's young ) with no skills to find other employment and no clue how to find another source of income. While they make alot, I imagine they also spend a fortune on taxes and lawyer/agent fees.
We have to get over the illusion that every player who plays in the hockey league is making and walking away with millions or that they all have long and lengthy careers. There just seems something contradictory when people making thousands tell millionaires to get over themselves and take anything but whats best for them, but then turn to the millionaires and say they shouldnt cant do the same to billionaires. |

Are they not allowed to work after hockey?
Most of them will become commentators or analysts or coach minor league teams.
Or they'll get hired as faces for brokerage firms or dealerships.
NOTHING stops these guys from working after hockey. - braidan

Im not sure its fair to call them dumb. Ignorant and immature, yes.
There arent many of us here who can honestly say we have never made financial errors in our youth. Many people dont truly understand and comprehend the importance and restraint of handling money until our 30s.
But guys that make as much as the example you give above? No excuses. |

Do the players and the owners realize how poorly this makes them look? It sounds to me, more and more as these talks drag on, that the players are incredibly self centered and arrogant. With that said I expect that from the players. What I would be more concerned with is how this looks if I was an owner. These guys are mostly business moguls. Men with employees and brand(s) attached to their names. Take Katz for example. Already looking at losing his arena over politics and public opinion which is making people turn away from his brand of drug stores. Now he can't even get his team on the ice? This is a billionaire and he is squabbling over a couple of little issues.
I say little when compared to the bigger picture of the business he runs. He is just one of several owners that are respected members of the community and they just seem petty. Either get your team on the ice or sell it. There are other people out there that will buy them (they might want to move them to Seattle, Markham or Quebec but they will buy them). |

So the PA requested 2 buyouts...and now they are mad that GM's might use them!
lol, dragging their feet, now it turns out the HRR definitions changed days ago but the PA needed something to be butthurt about so they could re-vote

Jordan Leopold does. Sydney Crosby Doesn't. Donald Fehr doesn't remember what Jordan Leopold looks like, but has Sydney Crosby on speed dial. That is the difference. |
