Always liked Sekera. Regehr has just lost too much gas for my liking.
As I stated before I dont see the Flyers beating the top teams in the playoffs. I would use this season to further evaluate guys like Meszaros, Brayden Schenn, Cooties, Read, Simmonds, Bryzgalov and Voracek. Where they fit in long term and if the team should keep them in the mix. Or buyout/trade them to improve the back end.
I rather keep all available assets and improve in the summer. To win a cup the Flyers will need another 1-2 top end guys on the blueline (depending on Kimmo).
Improve in the summer, and set a real blueprint for the futurre. That would have been done if the team got Shea Weber but what is done is done. - flyer_nutter
I agree with that premise. Build a team for the long haul. Draft well and make some key moves. Don't make a move just to make one. They can always add a veteran stop gap defenseman at the trade deadline, fairly cheap. Hopefully Gustafsson get's healthy and then plug him into the lineup and lets find out if he can play at this level.

I think the whole thing is picking your poison to be honest.
If not the Flyers, who do you think takes the cup? - flyer_nutter
Yes, the Rangers look really good. Last year they had a horseshow up their ass not being bit by the injury bug. Gaborik will now be ready to start the season.
You never know. The season can play out a thousand different ways. With teams playing 3+ games a week on average, there is going to be a slew of injuries. |

Achilles healed, knock on wood. Still get some pain on occasion. I'm a married man now, it's had a calming effect on me. |

One interesting name in terms of defensemen is former Lightning Paul Ranger. He left the Bolts for personal reasons and was out of sight for awhile, but he signed an AHL deal with the Marlies and has been very solid for them. He was a solid puck mover, capable of a 2nd pair role before he took his leave.
Food for thought. |

Ouch, never had anything even close to it.
I actually got engaged before christmas myself. Never thought I would do it so young, but were both crazy as (frank).

really surprising to see that a schenn or coots for subban wouldnt be met with total opposition from a lot of you guys |

The Flyers could wait for a young guy to hit the open market or draft a stud.
That requires a poop load of patience. Ive never had any myself. |

Signing a stud on the market is the route to go. Trading Schenn or Couturier is robbing Peter to pay Paul.
So disappointing Weber isn't here. |

The player has to be there, and it will require Cap space to do so. The Flyers are lacking in the latter. They need to develop one or trade for one.

i definitely do understand the way of thinking. and i know you have to give to get. i guess maybe its that i dont hold subban as high as some people. but the fact that schenn and coots were deemed untouchable by everyone in the trade for weber, but could be in play for the lesser subban was just surprising. was it basically because nashville wasnt believed to have any other options? |

Well the odds of them drafting one and developing him is very minimal. The best homegrown dman over the last quarter century is Chris Therien. |

Doesn't mean it can't happen. The odds of drafting a defenseman and having him develop into a stud is low for any team.
The only defenseman that even approaches that level that is due to be a UFA is Edler. |

definitely much tougher than forward prospects. takes longer to develop by a mile as well. i just think the trio of giroux schenn and coots is going to be ridiculous for you guys. more valuable than moving one for subban over the long haul |

I would give up Brayden Schenn reluctantly for the right player. I don't know if Subban is that player. But if the Flyers ever want to be a top team, they need a dynamic 2 way top defenseman.

So did I until around Thanksgiving(US). I was looking through some AHL stuff and saw he was playing for the Marlies.
As of now, in 28 games for the Marlies, Ranger has 18 points(5 goals) in 28 games, with a +17 & 32 PIM....looking for more in depth numbers for him |

I'd align myself with Bill Meltzer's opinion...Couturier isn't an option, but I could possibly be persuaded to part with Schenn in a Subban deal. |
