It did it's job.

Bill mentioned Gonchar, I was not a fan of going after him last year, because I felt the cap hit for this year would cost them Carle...now that that is out of the way, Gonchar makes sense.

But, looking at the Ottawa blueline, they seem a bit thin. They have two solid pairs, in Karlsson & Methot and Phillips & Ginchar, but after that it's untested(Jeff Cowan) and not so highly regarded(Lundin, Wiercioch)

The rules about cap hits on an early retirement are worrisome, but it's not a foregone conclusion that Bryzgalov gets bought out. Even with the cap drop, they will still have some wiggle room.
