Maatta was described as vanilla by a couple of scouts in the Hockey News draft preview. The Flyers might have thought the same. If you look at the people drafted after Laughton, nobody really stands out so far in my opinion. Maybe he was the best available.
- psuhockey

I'm guessing the Flyers believe he was truly the best available. You want as many good players in your system as you can get.

One look at the Phantoms should tell you that the Flyers need all of the organizational depth they can get.

To me winning the cup isn't what it is all about. That is something which is so rare it's like taking up astronomy just to see haley's commet. I do it for the rush of goals being scored, the big hits and tension with the game on the line with minutes winding down. The playoffs to me are like a roller coaster up and down some longer than others. Don't get me wrong it be great to win a cup, I'd love for it to happen but if that's all people are watching for they need to take up another hobby. The days of a team winning it multiple years in a row are over. There might be a repeat here and there but dynasties are done. As far as I'm concerned ed snider gives me everything I can ask of an owner as a fan, a competitive team with the shot at winning it all every year.

What's gonna change if the Flyers win a cup? Nothing, think rival fans will suddenly kiss your ass? You still have bills to pay and a job to go to. Now if the Flyers were the Leafs I'd be in a whole other frame of mind.

edit: sorry for the long rant but I just feel with the topic of the teams weakness that conversation will eventually get pulled by some into the pit of whining about not winning a cup since watergate.

Hey, I'm watching Cup or not. I love the sport and the team, regardless of Cup wins.

Don't let it happen again . yeah I have to think he will be bought out the moment its allowed. what a bad contract
- nastyflyergirl

If he could be bought out now, I'd be OK with the Flyers signing him to a short term deal for the cheap.

Oh, my mistake. Yeah, Redden's getting bought out as soon as the buyouts come into play
- Jsaquella

Remember when Redden was the 2nd overall pick?

I wonder if he's got anything left in the tank at 35?

I still can't believe when Ottawa had to choose between him & Chara that they picked Redden

I wasn't so much concerned about whether he was a reach or not, I just think they need defense prospects more than they need offense, and there were some better defense prospects available.
- MBFlyerfan

D-prospects at that stage of the draft are a complete crap shoot, for a combination of factors -- it's almost always safer to pick a forward at that point, as the Flyers have had a lot of success doing.

Just recall how close the Flyers came to ending up with Sanguinetti instead of Giroux in that 2006 draft.

That was a weird draft overall. When they took Stolarz in the 2nd round I braced myself for the subsequent Bryzgalov hate.

Could be worse. Imagine being the guy who chose Sam Bowie over Michael Jordan.

I'm excited to see Shayne Gostisbehere develop. He might have been a steal as a 3rd rounder. He had a shaky WJC what with the suspension and all though.

1st round pick Scott Laughton has a nameplate here for camp. Holmgren did not say he was coming MON

Flyers first round pick Scott Laughton will be coming in from Oshawa, team is interested in giving him a long look for this year.

Cheap option that gives Couturier a possible chance to take on a bigger offensive role. I doubt he sticks but it will still be something interesting to watch.

I'm hoping he stays for, at most, the 9 game tryout. Nice to see him get a look, but no need to rush him.

The story is that Muckler just went with the first guy that he could get to come to terms. Unfortunately for them, that was Redden.
