Just for conversation purposes, any interest in Redden for 1/2 his cap hit? With teams allowed to absorb half of a cap hit in trade, and the Rangers having his full cap hit now, they may look to do what they can. Doubt it would happen, but Redden at a $3.25 cap hit for 2 years (I think)? - KATG
I haven't seen him play in so long. I guess the question would be, can he still play to the level of a 3.25 mil guy or is he completely done? |

You can still send him down, but would have to carry a portion of his contract on the cap. - bradleyc4
True, there would be a "shallow" grave for Walker |

Not with the cap dropping next year. I'd rather look at him when the Rags exercize their buyout on him in June |

Calgary needs him. More likely that Stajan could be a buyout candidate. - bradleyc4
I was thinking too that they could get a decent return for him in a trade rather than walk away with nothing.

Forwards with Couturier's skill set -- a young and already playoff-proven shutdown center with decent offensive upside to boot -- are very hard to come by. In fact, they are every bit as tough to find as young NHL defensemen who are already pretty good at the top level but could get significantly better in the near future. I would've been willing to see the Flyers part with Couturier-plus to land Weber; a true franchise defenseman in the prime of his career. Short of being the centerpiece for a deal for a franchise defenseman, Couturier should be untouchable.
It's a short year - unfortunately a throw away year. The stanley cup record books will have an "*" next to it....
I say we move Couturier to Defense for the year. It would solve the "no puck moving defenseman". Pair him up with a defensive-defenseman to clear the crease, and allow Coots to join the rush.
Just an idea... only half serious. We need Sami back... by the way, doesn't Shelley often play defense in practice.

That would be ideal, but we do need help this year. Also, say he is a UFA next summer, he would still easily have a cap hit of $2.5+, so it may be worth the exta 1 mill to have the needed help now. The X factor though is that I have no idea of the level he is at these days. He has always been a solid NHL Dman, just not worth a 6.5 hit. |

Only half serious... you decide which half.
My point was, the options for adding any defenseman worthy of ice time is looking poor. Maybe try to convert a defensive forward into a defensiveman. |

True, they do need the help right away...I'm a bit leery of the cap implications, but you're probably right of the $2.5mm or so hit next year, too |

I don't think that's as easy as it might seem. Plus, I'd rather not inhibit the growth of a guy like Couts. He's too good as a forward anyway. Shelley's too slow for defense and it's not that they need a defensemen, it's that they need a puck mover. |

was just going to suggest this only with t kaberle instead.
edit: not saying i'd do it. but something to talk about. |

He's not done, but still not worth $3.25M these days.
Plus, could you imagine the fan reaction when he routinely deigns to play the body or turns the puck over with regularity? Matt Carle's time here would be a cakewalk by comparison.
Mayyyybbbeeeee after the Rangers bought him out and he came on a PTO. Other than that, hell no. |

I think we should go after Kaberle, to be honest.
Be the first team to use that "absorbing cap hit" rule in the new CBA a la the MLB.
He sure as hell wouldn't be that expensive, right?? Kind of a low risk thing for the puck mover we need at a good price, providing some of his salary gets eaten. |

If they start out 1-4, and Bryz has a save % less than .900, I'm jumping. |
