Not a great draft class, but the performance of others in that draft do not effect what JVR does. He came in very highly touted and didn't live up to expectations. He's still a young kid and certainly has time to develop into a excellent player. - PLindbergh31
I'm simply stating that, as draft classes go, there were fairly slim pickings past Kane. Should they have taken Kyle Turris or Thomas Hickey instead? I'm not comparing him to others in his draft class as much as comparing him to other 2nds in other years since the lockout (Ryan, J. Staal, Doughty, Hedman, Seguin, Landeskog). |

yes - Jsaquella
With a contract like Luongo's, Vancouver might be better off buying him out at year's end if they can't get the haul they want for him. Same would go for Bryz although I can't see him being dealt. |

Depends on what the expectations were. John Leclair? Never would have been able to meet those expectations.. ever. He was reasonably solid... he battled injuries a few times which were pretty capable of hindering his top play. He was very streaky.. that I will admit

The thing is, they'll get a taker for Luongo and get value for him. Does it offset the concern over an early retirement cap hit? Not sure. |

Bryz to the leafs - nails
The buzz seems to suggest that there is going to be a flurry of trades over the next week. Acquiring Luongo and trading Bryzgalov are not necessarily synonymous acts. The Leafs, Hawks and Blue Jackets have an urgent need for an upgrade in goal. Vancouver will not trade with Chicago. They would like to avoid dealing with the Leafs. Luongo has a no trade clause and he has already indicated that he is reluctant to go to Toronto. And, he probably does not want Columbus at this point in his career.
I think the Flyers can trade Bryzgalov and use the proceeds from that trade plus other incentives to acquire Luongo.

Well, there's David Perron, Kevin Shattenkirk, Voracek & Sam Gagner from the 1st round. The 2nd round had PK Subban and Wayne Simmonds. Biggest steal was easily Jamie Benn in round 5 - Jsaquella

Thats about the only way I would even be remotely close to ok with it. |

I didn't think JVR would be John Leclair. those are unfair expectations. I think the disappointment to me at least, was the lack of consistency. But I suppose with young players that is to be expected. I don't know, time to move on he's no longer in Philly. |

I agree. I think Toronto would give up some nice prospects and/or a good NHL player for him and that might be enough for Vancouver to eat a potential retirement hit. If no team were to offer any high level prospect/NHL players for him (which seems doubtful) I would just buy him out. |

Combining the contract with the NMC and all the negative publicity, I doubt that the Flyers would be able to trade Bryzgalov even if the early retirement clause was not in the new CBA |

Rumor was that Toronto was asked for Gardiner & Kadri. That is a big price to pay for Luongo, with the considerations about early retirement |

I think people need to look and see that there is no system in existence that will make a player a good Goalie, when he simply isn't one. And that any Goalie would look better when there is solid team defense played in front of him. Don't minimize the players role in looking good in a system. Players make systems work, not the other way around. - MJL

The expectations were that of a guy who was picked 2nd overall in his draft year. Fair or not, that's what it was. It didn't help some Flyers fans that the guy picked ahead of him had greater success and scored the Cup winning goal on the Flyers. I think the expectations for JvR were appropriate, actually.
Also....Calling someone "streaky" is a kind way of saying they were inconsistent. Which is precisely why JvR was traded.

What prospects.... if you dont mind?
That wouldnt be a terrible idea, but i dont think it would make much sense.
I would much rather see us put a few eggs in a basket and try to get PK Subban. - jak521
I haven't thought that far ahead yet. I doubt you get Subban for anything less then either Schenn or Coots plus prospects.

That just doesn't seem logical. 1) While Luongo is better, he is 33 and still has 10 years left on his deal. You'd essentially be getting rid of one bad contract to acquire another. 2) If Bryz were to retire before his deal ended, we'd be responsible for the reformulated cap hit, which we can avoid by buying him out before 2014-15, if need be. 3) Luongo has been known to be less than savory in big games which opens up a PR nightmare just as bad or worse than Bryz's. 4) The Flyers wouldn't trade Brayden Schenn or Sean Couturier for Shea Weber, so why would they be open to giving up young talent/NHL ready players in which they'd have to offer greater value than other suitors (i.e. the Leafs)? 5) They need defense, not goaltending. |

I just think it is extremely unfair to suggest someone hasnt lived up to expectations when they have only played 2 and a half seasons, and a good bit of that injured. |

Definitely. And it also be said that it's hard to label a defenseman at 23 as not having lived up to expectations. Both players are still in the infancy of their careers. Flyers traded potential for potential. Just for a position of need. |

I think he played exactly how most young players perform over their first few seasons. Look at G's first two seasons. Look at Kessel, Joe Thornton, the Sendin bros., Marrian Hossa... most guys dont just jump into the league and play like superstars.. it takes a few years to really hit your stride.. JvR has played 2 and a half seasons.. watch by year 3-4...
I dont put much stock in the whole, he was a 2nd overall pick. It was known right then that it wasnt a power draft class.

Absolutely.
Its a deal that could potentially make both sides very happy.. I think people just assume all players come in an make immediate impacts. Hell a few years ago people wanted to ship Giroux out of town.. look how that would have turned out. |
