There's speculation it will happen at the WFC practice on Thursday night

Just saw that Panotch was told it is being considered on Thrusday now. Even better: make a fan fest out of the whole thing. Oi vey. Now the situation will be blown even further out of proportion!

Giroux can handle it though. Personally, I would want Timonen to be captain this year since it's a shortened season and Giroux can just worry about his play and get some more experience--the Zubrus hit comes to mind.

Consider the era. Consider injuries. How many 40 goal seasons did he have? He wasn't 1 dimensional offensively, the hockey smarts to take plays was there too.
- SuperSchennBros

6 40 + goal seasons.. Again, Im not putting my nose down on him.. He is one of the best to ever play.. possibly the best European forward to ever play, and is a first ballot HOF'er... but to say he was one of the best snipers is an over statement to me. He was an all around fantastic player.. but I wouldnt put him in the elite snipers group..

Just my personal opinion.

I want it to be either Coburn or Talbot personally.

Coburn is the most tenured Flyer, and a true leader. Talbot, well.. look at how he plays.

I was also Ok with the Richards return, but he's a guy that has won at every level he's played at, and served as captain of most of those winning teams. It's hard to move a guy that has that track record.

lol..

How do you think Crosby is gonna do this year.. stay healthy and dominate? Not being an ass either.. just curious at what you guys expect.. I have some people in the Pens blog who have said they could see him putting up 80 points.. that is crazy talk... right?

- jak521

If he's healthy for 48 games no I don't think that's crazy. I believe my prediction was 76 or 78. I expect big things. Like him or not, the kid is a point machine.

80 points in 48 games would be 1.67 points per game. His clip over the last two seasons has been 1.635 (103 points in 63 games between 2010/11 & 2011/12) so I don't think that's out of the question.

I would choose Kimmo too if I got to pick but I think G will be fine. He's friendly with the media & rarely gets put in the doghouse by the fans (a luxury Richie didn't have) because he's always producing. He's a superstar & where he might lack in maturity & experience he makes up in elite skill.

I would imagine they need to do something to spice that event up.

Maybe it's because I've been to a bunch of practices in Voorhees, but I fail to see how this Thursday event is any great "Thank You" to the fans. You know, full well, they are going to charge normal game prices for concessions, etc.

- johndewar

There's not going to be any Thank You to fans...they see the numbers of people ordering tickets and going to camp. You don;t need to put out a plate of sugar if the house is already full of flies

Only reason I don't want Kimmo is because, as great as he is, if he retires it will be another one-and done (a la Forsberg and Jason Smith). Since Lindros lost the captaincy in 2000, there have been 7 captains to date. If Kimmo gets the C and then retires and G gets it next season, that is 9 captains in 14 seasons. I say just give it to Giroux now if he's ready, and let Kimmo keep an A.

My guess is upper 60s, low 70s. I firmly believe that if had not gotten hurt, the debate for best player in the world wouldn't even be close. I think he would've put up around 125 points in 2010-11 (he was on pace for 64 goals, 68 assists, 132 points when he went down) and around that same amount or more in 2011-12 (his 37 points in 22 games would be 138 points in 82 games). The NHL leaders in points in 10/11 & 11/12 were Daniel Sedin (104 points) & Malkin (109 points) to put things in perspective.

Fair enough but scoring goals doesn't come as easy today as it did in the 80's and early 90's. The rules were changed at the end of the 2005 lockout, so there could be more goals scored. However, the players are just much bigger and stronger. There is a certain science to everything and everything is being watched. Not as much a free for all these days in terms of goal scoring. 30 goals is the new 40 in my mind.

I see your point but I don't know if having a lot of different captains is even an issue. I understand the want for continuity but that might be because we think it's a bigger deal than the coaches a players do. I tend to believe that we're making a much bigger deal of it than they are but I couldn't actually tell you, obviously.

My username actually derives from my buddy calling me "Nick the Kid" for my love of Sidney Crosby, which isn't always easy given the fact that I'm a Flyers fan.

I agree that the C isn't a huge deal. But in some places (like Montreal) there's a certain dignity that goes with it. Over the first 34 years, there were only 10 captains here. Since then, we've had 7 to date, soon to be 8. Not really an issue, just a thought.

I see what your saying. I just feel that G could learn from Timonen considering G hasn't been the superstar he is now when Pronger was healthy & when Richie wore the C. Regardless, this is G's team so might as well make it official.

I know, and the fact that you keep bringing this up in here tells me you don't care what others think of you, I respect that.

Not like BulliesPhan87, who tries to say 87 is his birth year. I see right through that guy.
