I would think the Islanders would be a good trading partner for one of your extra defenseman...

Sekera and Adam for Sam Gagner and a 2nd

discuss...

Personally dont think the Sabres need that kind of Center

Theres only about 8 or 9 teams that need help with depth on D.

Drop the 2nd and the deal is ok, not sure Edmonton would do it. It doesn't matter now because Edmonton got Mark Fistric for a 3rd yesterday.
- jzabawaj

why the heck would we need Sam Gagner right now???

he is no better than Ennis or Hodgson and by the looks of it so far it is going to be hard for Buffalo to send Grigorenko away. So where does that leave us... Gagner instead of Hecht as a 4th line center?? Injury depth?

Unless the plan is to undoubtedly send Grigo back to the Q. .there is no center position for Gagner to play.

didnt Ek say something like we were talking with LA?

Doubt they make a trade, Pardy is probably odd man out.

I don't think Sekera will be moved. He is better than most people give him credit for. If anything I think we would move Leopold, Weber, Brennan or Regehr. (no particular order)

I think Leo or Brennan are the trade baits right now.

We actually need to keep Sekera's contract becuase with the cap reducing next season... we need smaller contracts.

I don't know if it would be to add a winger.. a center.. or prospects/picks.. but Our roster is full right now. we would have to trade another top 9 guy in addition to Leo or Brennan in order to make space in our offense for the new player.

Unless we are upgrading our scoring forwards I think we will want picks or prospects in return for any defensemen.

Personally, I think he needs time to adjust to the NA game in the AHL for a season. Building up his relationship with the future of the Sabres like McNabb and Girgensons.

Armia will basically come and replace Vanek after the 2014 season if you ask me. We will have ALOT of roster turnover after the 2014 season with Miller, Vanek, and Pommer all UFAs. I hope we keep Pommer.

Sekera has a ton of value much to the disagreement of most of this board. I had a lengthy post last season just before the offseason that proved his value based on some "hockey sabermetrics". He was our best defenseman last year.

I think he would be the best player to receive the best value coming back this year. We could certainly afford to lose him THIS season. However, heading into the future, I think its critical we hold on to Sekera for the next 3 years.

Agreed. It would be a Stafford upgrade... or a Leino upgrade if we buy him out this summer. Unless we could miraculously ship Vanek out.

I would pay my left nut (my more favorite nut) if we were able to ship out Vanek and take like Perry's expiring contract in addition to Leo and a 2nd or 3rd rounder.

just throwing it out there..

Yea we got quite a few guys coming off contracts after this season could look the exact same if we get them all resigned and if not we could be a totally different team we just don't have the young prospects to replace the guys from within the system it should get real interesting after this season

I disagree about Vanek. I think he is the most under appreciated guy on the team. People see his salary and say how he is not worth it. What is forgotten is the fact of the offer sheet Edmonton threw out there. With losing Drury and Briere we had to match that offer. Granted, Vanek did disappear in the second half last season, remember he takes a pounding in front of that net nightin and night out. If he had a playmaking center (which I hope he has now) I think he will return to form.

Tell Paul Hamilton that. He is one of the people I am referring to that made that comparison.
- BuffaloHardHat

No offense but I take Paul Hamilton's opinion with a grain of salt. He tried comparing TJ brennan to Gringnani. There no where near the same player

He played with Roy the season when he put up those 84 points. He played with Roy a lot after we lost Drury and Briere as well.

This excuse of playmaking center is garbage. Vanek is Vanek's own worst enemy. He doesnt play consistently. He takes nights off. He is often out of shape and cant last an entire season.

Tired of the "takes a beating in front of the net" cliche too. The hacking in front of the net in todays NHL is nothing like it was prior to and including the early 90's.
