I don't want to just rip your Weber deal because I think it has merit.
You suggest that such a trade would allow Nashville to go full rebuild. Which they have done once in the past when Weber and Suter were coming up.
Why that would be incorrect is they are actually starting to pay some players to stick around. They invested a lot in their goaltender.
The other problem is you have had to notice that Nashville are shrewd talent evaluators. They have mostly received later first rounders but they rarely miss. They have depth. Many people think oh man they lost Suter. But they have a bunch of young dmen any of whom could step up in that position and become nearly if not as good as Suter.
So I would have to ask besides the salary constraint in that area of the world why they would want to trade the face of their franchise? They would have to be pretty impressed by an offer.
I will say this I believe it is likely you see Suter traded this off season. My bet is that Nashville will look somewhere out east where they can stick it to Philly.
As a GM you don't want to trade someone that shows up to your building often and makes fans think of what could have been. With Weber the Oilers would become contenders out of the same conference. How would that play out with the fans in Nashville to see Weber raising the Cup?
So in conference there would be a premium and even more so in division and believe me the Red Wings would surely consider after they fail to make the play offs this season.
The Red WIngs will have injuries to their forwards this season. One wonders who an older European of small size will deal with a crushing hit when he instinctively goes to an area that would allow for more time in Europe and is crushed?
All I am saying is Nashville would want more than a couple of first rounders and a solid defensive prospect. You said it yourself it is tough to see how many young players pan out let alone dmen who often take longer to develop. All I have say is Erik Johnson. Erik Johnson who should pose as a stern warning for teams looking at Seth Jones who shows much of the same flair, size and ability.
I would guess something like Teemu Hartikainen along with two first rounders and a second and a third. On top of Oscar. Of course that would depend also on how good or bad the Oilers do this season. |

A valid cause for concern but what about how they think the game? Not to say an unproven Jones is all that much smarter than Ej is/was, but was that a strength of Johnson's game back around when he was drafted? In Seth Jones' case, based on personal viewings and what the scouts say, his smarts appear to be a huge part of his game. I'm not sure the Johnson pick gets picked on as much if say, he goes a couple spots lower. He goes number one and it seems the expectations are amplified. |

Hi Richard, new to the commenting end of things but have been reading your blogs for quite some time (love your sarcastic way too). I think the point you miss on Redden, it's the amount of his contract not the player himself. He was buried due to the high contract not his ability to play. His offensive numbers were not the same as in Ottawa, but his last year playing for the Rangers he was still a +8. I still believe he is a great 5/6 defense man at 1-1.5. Having said all that I totally agree that he doesn't fit in Edmonton. |

DEAR ABBY:
Our son was married in January. Five months later his wife had a ten-pound baby girl. They said the baby was premature. Tell me, can a baby this big be that early?

Now just to rid the team of a few more plugs and they should be playoff bound.
Oh and trade for Shea Weber, cause apparently, that's happening. |

Most outsiders keep spouting about Edmonton needing D and Goaltending. Oil fans know that what we have is great. The Oilers problem hasnt necessarily been Defense. Its been Puck Moving. We had Whitney out and no one else that could move the puck. We'd get bottled up in our own zone and take a penalty or give up additional chances. Petry has improved immensely in that category, J Schultz looks like a great puck mover and Whitney is now healthy. We have Smid, N Schultz and Fistric shut down guys. I think this group is looking great right now and will surprise many this year. - Iggysbff
I hear ya but not exactly - thing is, smaller forwards as well and some overall puck retrieval deficiencies whether that is toughness all around or overall savvy - the Oilers have trouble getting the puck in order to make the smooth outlet.
But ya, with better and more experienced puck movers, I hope to see better overall advancement out of the D-zone. |
