When did Chief become Roman Hamrlik

I like to think my game looks more like Drew Doughty's. I am, however, a defenseman. You are correct in that regard.

yes fans pick and choose players to identify with. But the difference between your Frenchman and conservative fans analogy would be that you're talking about bringing in fans that don't exist. They're already are lots of conservative fans to watch football. There are lots of French people who watch hockey in Montreal.so there interest in players they can identify with is born out of the fact that they are already fans. Here is the bottom line black people don't watch hockey. Bringing in a defenseman is not going to change that. Now if we were talking about it offensive player who is netting 50 goals year I might say you have an argument. But I promise you if you sign PK Subban you will still never see more than 50 to 75 black people in that stadium.
- keaner17

Remains to be seen. Asians dont usually attend Knicks games in large numbers. But when they had that Asian Kid (sorry I dont remember his name) Was it Lin?

Didnt they come to the Garden to see him?

And what about when the Yanks signed that Japanese guy Hideki Matsui or what ever. They came out in droves to watch him. You just never know.

But you make a valid point. For the most part you see very few Black folks at Hockey games.

Why not an offer sheet? You dont wanna part with two draft picks?
- kindlyrick

You seem to be the only one on this blog who believes this would be a good move, via offer sheet. As I said earlier, he'd never sign with us but let's imagine for a moment...

According to last year's stats, he's 2 inches smaller (6'0") than Hamonic, has half as many hits (a paltry 105) nearly twice as many penalty minutes, and only 12 more points - should be noted he played top line & power play(14 of his 36 pts on pp) and played 20 more games than Travis. Let's not even discuss his fighting ability. Tavares can probably fight better than PK.

So, if you think he's worth more than Travis, plus some draft picks and is asking for almost as much as Tavares makes, then you and I need to get together,...I have a $20 bill that I'd like to sell you for $50.

Im not sure where your math is, but how do you get Tavares in this equation? You're going on too many assumptions. You're assuming the isles will finish last and then get lucky to get the first overall. You can take any of those guys over Subban, but may i remind you he's 23 years old........and the best dman on his team.
- kindlyrick

let's deal with one thing at a time:

example - shea weber, 125 million, massively front loaded, nashville, small market team, matched.

do you really think the brand new GM of Montreal, is going to explain to fans and ownership after one of the worst seasons in their history, that he let their best defenseman walk on a 5 million per year contract to the Islanders? Montreal's ownership would fire him immediately.

yeah..I don't think so. You can't get subban for 5 mil on an offer sheet, I don't give a poop what their local radio personality thinks. Bergevin is NOT going to have that as his first big "move"

NO chance, hell could freeze over and that still wouldn't happen. Philly went after Weber as aggressively as they could against a small market team that it's debatable whether or not they can even afford the signing bonuses, and Nashville still matched. The only GM willing to let someone go was Burke and that's because he's a stubborn hothead who won't pay more than he's offered and was willing to lose Penner rather than be less hard line.

tell me how I'm wrong here, you're attacking anyone who questions whether or not it's possible, or a good idea, but explain how this could even possibly happen.

I suppose my biggest concern is that Puck moving defenseman have not necessarily been our biggest problem on the defense. A lack of physicality in front of the net is where we have lacked. I'm not sure subban really improves us in that regard. this is why the development of guys like Hamonic and Mayfield will ultimately be the Islanders most important task for improving their defense.
- keaner17

Well, on the first part, lately everything about the defense has been our biggest problem. They haven't defended and they haven't scored. Jurcina, Eaton, Mottau, Staios...those guys didn't contribute much anywhere, and they made up more than half the D...the best you would hope for from them is that they just wouldn't screw up too bad on a given shift. But what I'd like about the six I listed is that all of them can play in their own zone as well as move the puck around. Even though a player like Streit may be better on offense, there is no strictly one-dimensional player like MAB or a no-dimensional player like Gervais. Agreed, that D could maybe use a bit more toughness, but Subban's not some pacifist pushover either. He's at least willing to throw a check. Plus you can sub Carkner in there for Martinek as needed, if that does anything for you.

On the second part, the good news is picking up a good defenseman doesn't mean Hamonic and Mayfield can't still develop.

I'll even go a step further for all the stat junkies:

Niklas Kronwall 36 pts -2 makes 4.75 million
Drew Doughty 36 pts -2 makes 7 million
Dan Hamhuis 37 pts -4 makes 4.5 million
Jack Johnson 38 pts -7 makes 4.4 million
Brent Seabrook 34 pts +21 makes 5.8 million

PK Subban 36 pts +9 is 5 million a year really that much for Subban?? The above mentioned are all right around PK in the stats (left out Lidstrom who had 2 less pts than Subban haha)

- kindlyrick

You make a good argument.
