Some hockey systems..
1-2-2
2-1-2
3-2
1-1-3 (tampa uses this from time to time)
I honestly dont know what our system is. We normally have 1 guy forchecking and the other 4 wandering around imo..
Our d dont pinch, mostly bc I think they cant.
Our team doesnt move as a team. They move as two seperate units while on the ice. Nj/det move as a single unit.
Why dont you prove to me that you understand what a system is before we delve into this. So I know where your educational lvl is.
When I played hockey all the coach talked about was the system the system.. play our system.. for something that doesnt mean much coaches talk about it a lot |

I mistyped my post, and I edited it. I know exactly what Hockey systems are, and basically what systems the Flyers use. I wonder if you do, or if you understand them. If you did, you wouldn't be bringing it up as the problem constantly. - MJL
What systems do the flyers use? |

Watching the games, considering how disorganized the Flyers look, I don't know what they're really trying to do either.

1 player is all we need eh? What happens the other 35 minutes "he" isn't on the ice, assuming this 1 d-man is of the ilk that plays that much a game? - eayost
We arent one dman away.
I hope lavy makes some changes. He is by far my favorite coach. |

Flyers need to simplify their game. Get a guy in front of the net and shoot. We rarely screen the goalie anymore but we keep getting guys who are good at it.
Crashing the net is flyers hockey..whatever they are doing now isnt flyers hockey. |

I put ninety percent of the blame for opposing goals thus far on breakdowns by the Flyers team defense (defensemen and forwards alike). Besides, you aren't going to win many games when you put one, two, and zero regulation goals on the scoreboard. - bmeltzer
Exactly, Bill. The start reminds me of 1995 except we don't have a Mark Recchi to trade to fill holes caused by the departures of Jagr & Carle. |

Bill mentioned it and I agree...
The Flyers miss a veteran presence...if it was Jagr, Pronger or Danny Boy...or sign someone...although Danny Boy is suppose to be back soon |

Good question. If you have a Karlsson or Pietrangelo or Doughty playing against you for 25 minutes a game you have to play every possession like they are in the neutral zone. Because, if you get sloppy they will reverse the play on you so fast you won't recover. With 45 second shifts you can't risk their not being there. |

In general I don't think they sustain enough pressure in the offensive zone to really get guys setup in front to do any real disruption of the goalie. Or they end up needing all the forwards along the boards just to keep possession of the puck, so they're no one in front. |

Remember when flyer players use to block shots with their faces? You never see anyone trying to block shots anymore. Feds did last night. Sacrifice is needed to win games.
These guys are always thinking offense.. |

The type of D-man they need just isn't the type that you can just go out and get either. |

I really believe that the systems in place from the dzone, thru the nuetral zone, to the ozone need to be reworked.
Teams have learned our system. Quick passes makes our forcheck irrelevant and our nuetral zone coverage allows opposing players to do as they please.
The dzone is a complete disaster and has been now since pronger went down. Doesnt helop that we downgraded on offense and defense but kept the expectations for this team just as high, if not higher. - Flyersgod

Could be right.. I dont have the answers. None of us do. But there is something wrong here. Goes all the way back to richy and carter era. Playing 40 mins a game is now a habit.

Dating back to last year what is this now 11 straight combined losses to the Devils and Rangers? Unacceptable. |

Honestly, all this talk of systems and footspeed is immaterial until they start executing better.
Not one of the three goals last night was due to system or footspeed, but poor execution.
The first goal saw a total team breakdown that left Travis Zajac all alone in front of the net with all 5 Flyers skaters one the opposite side of the ice.
The second goal was more of a fluke than poor execution. That said, Guys have to be ready for what Clarkson did on the play.
The third goal came off a turnover. Kovalchuk pressed Timonen, who got the puck down the boards. When he did, Kovalchuk circled out to the neutral zone, and when the other Devils forward pressed and stole the puck off the boards, it was simply to spring Kovalchuk for the breakaway that led to the penalty shot.
Now, I'm not saying the Flyers couldn't use more speed-especially on defense-and that Laviolette's attack style needs to be tweaked to better fit the players on hand now. That said, the execution of simple hockey play, regardless of system has been dreadful. They could be playing a neutral zone trap, but if they execute the way they did last night they'd still lose badly.
All this talk of speed and systems is fine, but it means nothing until the execution improves. |

That's great and all. Which among those three Norris candidates is going to be available for trade? Even if LA or St Louis or Ottawa is struggling, those guys are young enough to be kept and used as cornerstones for those teams.
The one option might be Subban, and I'm all for trying to land him. But it's not going to be cheap and Montreal may not be willing to move him anyhow, despite the contract impasse. |

I think we all know the team is capable of better execution. That can be taught. You cant make the D men any faster. You just cant. I think thats why it keeps getting brought up.

I hope you are right. If im right we will lose one of the best coaches the flyers have had. Execution is def an issue. But does that explain not being able to beat tight defensive teams like boston/nyr/tbl |

I think Montreal is hoping someone does get PK on an offer sheet. That way they match and it doesn't look (as much) like they gave in to his demands.

Weber was a good option although he dominates the neutral zone in a different way. Subban would have great impact on the Flyer attack. Carle was better most thought. Pronger was a career superstar who owned the neutral zone his entire career.
