I don't think I have ever seen so many decent passes fumbled or not handled cleanly as I have over the past three games. To me that speaks to lack of concentration, not bearing down and making sure you get that pass.
It is akin to running before you make the catch and then dropping the ball.
Add to that the WAY too numerous times where a Flyer tries to stick handle through 4 opposing players when trying to enter the offensive zone and you have a nightmare. - MBFlyerfan
The passing game-both ends of it-have been bad. When the passes are clean and tape to tape, the guys not handling it right. Other times it's cross ice passes to nobody or in skates...
That's the part that encourages me, once that comes around we will see exactly what adjustments and moves really need to be made, rather than people simply female doging the defense is too slow |

It's kind of dumb to generalize. If a guy knows hockey well enough, you can always hired a guy as assistant GM who can handle the contract side of it. Look at a guy like Jay Feaster. He's a businessman, and after winning a Stanley Cup with Rick Dudley's players, he overpaid three of them and watched the team crumble, then goes to Calgary and hands out more NTCs than Holmgren and builds a team that is consistently the 10th best in his conference.
Hell, Brian Burke is a former player AND a bussiness guy...how'd he fare in Toronto? - Jsaquella
Thank you. Generalizing is always stupid, whether it be in hockey or somewhere else. Hire a GM based on what he/she brings to the table, not on what their previous profession was. |

i do see your point. i worry that the pens wont be able to keep letang when he asks for pushing 7. however, i think more often than not the main key guys can be locked up if you dont have any albatrosses on the team. you guys will have a lot of money coming off of the books in briere and timonen. |

thats what i mean the position is usually always reserved for a former player, its like a unwritten rule...
and so hockey experience makes one more qualified for the position. then why do u pay scouts all that money to evaluate talent if the the GM (a former player) should be able to do the same damn thing - Flyers4Life88

Teams hire scouts because one person(the GM) can't see every game possible. What is the GM supposed to do, fly from Moose Jaw to Sweden, back to NY to see the Flyers play the Rangers and then head to LA to scout the Sharks? While at the same time monitoring his own team's play and performance to accurately judge what it needs? |

It's interesting that they'd be interested, although he's not bad at the price ($700K) |

I don't even begin to understand that question. Scouts are former players and there are a ton of scouts looking at talent all over the world. What, you think the GM should be able to evaluate 300 draft eligible kids each year by himself while conducting the day to day business of running the team? What do you even mean?
Holmgren was a player, a coach, a scout, an assistant GM. It's not like he just rolled over one day and put on a suit instead of shoulder pads and strolled into the GMs office. It's not the 70s any more. |

What is wrong with Read in that he can't get a look on the top line? If this guy isnt a fixture on our top 2 lines he needs to be traded. When Briere gets healthy I'd like to see

Most of the consensus has Drouin behind Jones & MacKinnon. I think if I have top pick I go with MacKinnon, despite the glut of centers. - Jsaquella

Flyers should trade him in the right deal. Once his co tract is up he will want a raise. One that cant be afforded. |

As a side effect of trying to make it better. It's not his fault Pronger went down and it's not his fault Dennis Wideman signed a ridiculous contract and caused Carle's price to skyrocket. He went after Suter, Parise and Weber HARD. It didn't work but not for a lack of trying. |

There's no guarantee Jones can step right in and defensemen take longer than forwards, in general. Not saying it'd be wrong to take Jones at number one, either. |

ok but he should continue to try to make this team better. theres no Dmen worthy of a contract in 2013 UFAs, therefore the only solution would be through a trade

Do you actually think that Holmgren's not shopping for defense help right now? Should he just make the first deal that comes along? Or rush into a trade now, when teams know he's desperate? Because nobody'd ever take advantage of a desperate GM, right? |

a question I have in trading for a solid dman is whether a dman would be going the other way in a trade? |

I'd say there are a handful of potential UFAs that could help the team this offseason including Visnovsky, Hainsey, Streit and Ryan Whitney. And Homer and the Flyers are ALWAYS kicking the tires on potential trades. To think that Homer won't make some type of a move if the team continues to struggle is asinine. The Flyers have always tried to better the team regardless of who the GM is. |

Well were only 3 games in. Dont know if hes actively shopping. He said right before the season started that he likes the defense when everyone in the media was bashing it.
I hope he doesn't make a desperate move. What is the piece to go the other way? |

It's possible. If there's a team that could use a defensive defenseman, perhaps they'd want a guy like Nik Grossmann in return.
Say Ottawa was willing to trade Gonchar here. They'd probably want a defenseman in return, considering that they are thin and could use another stay at home type. In addition, trading Gonchar and not getting salary back puts them below the floor. |

I'm sure he's kicking tires, regardless what he said to the media. The piece going back would depend on the quality coming in. |
