It's possible. If there's a team that could use a defensive defenseman, perhaps they'd want a guy like Nik Grossmann in return.

Say Ottawa was willing to trade Gonchar here. They'd probably want a defenseman in return, considering that they are thin and could use another stay at home type. In addition, trading Gonchar and not getting salary back puts them below the floor.

What is wrong with Read in that he can't get a look on the top line? If this guy isnt a fixture on our top 2 lines he needs to be traded. When Briere gets healthy I'd like to see

That's exactly what I'm saying. I'm just saying that him not being signed gives you some leverage. You can talk to him and float the structure of a contract. That's not tampering because he's not signed. Once he knows where you're at with money that puts the clamps on Montreal, then you can try to make that trade happen.
