Lot's of teams haven't won the Cup that were President Trophy winners:
1985–86 Edmonton Oilers
1987–88 Calgary Flames
1989–90 Boston Bruins
1990–91 Chicago Blackhawks
1991–92 New York Rangers
1992–93 Pittsburgh Penguins
1994–95 Detroit Red Wings
1995–96 Detroit Red Wings
1996–97 Colorado Avalanche
1997–98 Dallas Stars
1999–00 St. Louis Blues
2002–03 Ottawa Senators
2003–04 Detroit Red Wings
2005–06 Detroit Red Wings
2006–07 Buffalo Sabres
2008–09 San Jose Sharks
2009–10 Washington Capitals
2010–11 Vancouver Canucks
2011–12 Vancouver Canucks
In fact, only 7 teams who won the President's Trophy managed to win the Cup. We're not the only team to get close and lose or lose in the first round the next year. - DariusKnight
... And how many back-to-back President's Trophy winners haven't won the cup?
I guess you could say the Red Wings, but they've also won two cups in the last 10 years.

Thought he was saying to never win the cup. Think only team that comes close would be the 09-10 caps. Not many teams have iced so many strong teams and still 0 cups to show for it.

2 Cups out of 10 years isn't that great when you think about the players they had, they had sure-fire HOFers like Yzerman, Lidstrom, Chelios, Fedorov, Larionov, Hasek, etc. The only players on the Canucks that you could even consider potentially Hall-worthy in our elite years would be the Sedins and Luongo and MAYBE Kesler if he ever returns to his '10-'11 form rather than his oft-injured, always diving one. |

I loved Gretz. We all did, and were sad and enraged to see him sold....
but as soon as he donned a Kings jersey, that little female dog was the enemy. |

Those teams were good yes, but not sure they quite match up to the star power that is in Vancouver. |

We might have a winner... - As_I_See_It
Gretz set records of 163 assists and 215 points that year. They scored well over 400 goals. Paul Coffey set dman records in goals and points and won his 2nd straight Norris. Over 50 wins. Inaugural Presidents Trophy.Won the division 30 points ahead of the Flames. Heavy heavy favorites to three peat....
....and then...Steve Smith.
I challenge anybody to find me a bigger let down story. |

McSorley was born in Hamilton, Ontario, but grew up near Cayuga, a small town in Haldimand County.
He made his NHL debut in October 1983 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but rose to fame after a trade in September 1985 brought him to the Edmonton Oilers. His arrival and physical presence soon made Edmonton's incumbent enforcer Dave Semenko expendable, and McSorley inherited the title of "Wayne Gretzky's bodyguard". |

All of those teams had rosters comparable to Vancouvers at the time. Most even had better secondary scoring then we did during our run to the Final in 2011. |

He didnt do anything psychotic in Edmonton though. That came later...and still pales compared to what Bertuzzi did, stick ot not.
Neither is as bad as Marchment, Kaspiritis or Samuelsson were though. They were true menaces with no regard for other players. |

Moore turtled and pulled Bertuzzi down on top of him after the sucker punch to the back of the head, then everyone else piled on top of them. |

MASSIVE let down I agree, but at least the Oilers had already won two cups in the previous two years AND THEN went on to win another three in four years.
Five cups in seven years, hardly a let down. |
