For some reason, some players are better NHL players then AHL players. No idea why, but Wellwood may be one of those players.

One theory is that some players are better "reactors" than "thinkers," meaning if they have less time to think they perform better. The only example I can think of otherwise was former MLB outfielder Brett Butler, who said (paraphrased) that the less time he had at the plate/in the field/on the bases to think about things, the better he'd play.

He's their lead defenseman. Getting a lot of icetime. He racks up a good amount of assists regardless. Playing on a PP with St. Louis and Stamkos, he's going to get his fair share.

Have you ever played hockey at a high enough level to use a system?

Not saying they are rocket science.. but if these coaches used basic systems they wouldnt be in the nhl coaching.. imo

Kids are playing versions of these systems all the way back to squirts. The systems are all the same. What gets different is the execution of higher level players. They get faster, they have to think faster, execute faster, react faster. That is the difference between levels.....but the strategies are all basically the same.

Even if that was true.. wouldnt that mean systems are really important to the game?

If we teach kids these systems.. they are obviously important.

Have you played high levels of hockey?
