now that the rules have changes, Burke would be on same playing field as everybody else, not handicapping himself.

the idea of trading Kessel is very simple. if you get more than fair value, trade him. if you get fair value or less, don't. fair value id say would be the equivalent of a top prospect/top 10 pick plus a player in the 21-24 range who can step in and contribute immediately on the second line.

your logic is flawed. did you think any of the pieces the Leafs traded for him would ever be as good as Kessel at the time? now it's conceivable that Kessel could wind up being the third best player in that deal. that's the thing about trading futures. it's a risk for both parties and usually the better run organization gets the better of the deal.

his value then will be about 60-70% of what it is now. that's just lousy asset management. good thing for the Leafs about getting rid of Burke is that they're out from under that deal. Nonis's legacy doesn't hang on the deal so he can trade Kessel and not have to worry about the backlash.

Then perhaps the offseason is the only viable time to trade him or at the Draft. I don't see a scenario period where the Leafs get fair value for him or even get what they need from the various teams (Penguins seem to be thrown around a lot) that'd want to acquire him.

Which, of course, is correct. No goals or assists, although he did manage a -10 in 15 games, which is quite impressive when you consider he was only on the ice for 14 shifts a game.

What I don't get is the obsession with Kessel 'not being a player you can build around' therefore you must trade him. Why do you have to build around him? If he can be resigned, why can't you also just keep him and keep building the team? They can afford to have a thirty goal sniper AND a number one centre at the same time, I would hope so anyway. Does it matter if you have the young sniper who is not a powerforward in place first?

Sure, they should keep their own first round pick next year absolutely, and try to get a 1C with that pick and via other means, in the meantime why not hold on to Kessel also? Let's say in an alternate universe the Leafs draft one of the top centres in this draft and sign Kessel to a long deal also, three or four years from now having Kessel still younger than thirty and everyone else you've managed to get on the team could work out very nicely.

I can just smell the trade coming where Kessel goes to a team and scores a couple hundred goals and the picks we get back aren't really anything special.
