If it's true that the price for puck moving dmen feels steeper when the GM has less assets to deal, then it's a good thing that the Flyers have some quality assets to deal.

All you need to do is look at these lines and realize defense is not the only problem here.

24 Matt Read - 14 Sean Couturier - 9 Mike Knuble
15 Tye McGinn - 10 Brayden Schenn - 93 Jakub Voracek

Yep. Team who claimed a guy off waivers to play with the reigning MVP is gonna chirp line combos?

I remember good, funny trolls that made a (frank)ing ounce of sense. Weak sauce, son. Weak.

For some reason I have a bad feeling about tonight's game. Washington can't suck forever, right?

What team has the worst back upgoalie this year?

I'd argue that we do.

Some could argue these guys are worse or unproven enough to qualify...

Leighton, Philadelphia (35-41-10-9)
Ben Bishop, Ottawa (7-9-0-3)
Al Montoya, Winnipeg (22-17-0-10)
Ben Scrivens, Toronto (5-7-0-2)
Jason LaBarbera, Phoenix (56-66-0-17)
Christopher Nilstorp, Dallas (0-2-0-0)
Chad Johnson, Phoenix (2-2-0-2)

What do all these teams have in common? (not including philly)

None are cup contenders.

One might argue that Cap's fans are saying the same thing about Philly... I think we'll be alright

Still not sure how simply trading for a defenseman that can move the puck solves the Flyers troubles.

A puck moving defenseman doesn't help everyone else pass better or take the open shots they have been passing up. A puck moving defenseman isn't going to stop some of the poor decision making that has plagued Claude Giroux and Jake Voracek, among others.

Not saying a puck moving defenseman isn't a need, but it's not a cure-all.

- Jsaquella

Definitely not a cure-all. But if they can bring in a guy who can run the point on the PP and ignite some scoring, a few goals (especially on the PP) could go a long way in rebuilding the confidence of the entire team.

It definitely wouldn't hurt, but at the same time, they're going to need a lot of the brain dead play to cease.

Sorry, but if for sone reason the Flyers were going to shop Couturier don't you think they at the very least wait til the offseason and give it another go for Weber? Things aren't going all that great in NSH either after all and he's still pointless for them.
- hereticpride

Weber is a pipe dream. He'll be in Nashville for a long while.

Agreed, I think his staying in Nashville was made concrete once they paid that first down payment (i.e. the bonus). Might as well get the full value on it, right?

By the time Weber is eligible to be traded, Nashville will have paid him around $26mm in a calendar year. There's no way they're trading him this July.

I hate that label "Cup Contender". Any team that gets into the playoffs, regardless of what seed they are, is a "Cup Contender" in my mind. Look at LA last year. They just got in. Same goes for the Flyers in 2010. You could even make the argument that the Devils last year weren't "legit" contenders especially after Florida took them to 7 games in the first round. Bottom line is, everything needs to fall into place to win a Cup. Role players need to play better than usual, stars need to perform like stars and the goaltender needs to be hot.

Exactly. They don't make that investment if they don't plan on seeing it through.

Monster statement game for both teams.

What if statements are huge either way.

If Capitals lose they are toast on the season and should start thinking about next year. They thought they had the mix to be a Cup contender. Perhaps they are in full rebuild mode by the end of February.

If Flyers lose the anxiety meter goes from concerned to controlled panic.

I think the discussion around Giroux' slow start is misplaced. Giroux plays an up tempo attack style game. He is fabulous in taking the puck in the neutral zone and moving creatively into the attack zone. But nobody on the back end is getting him the puck. There is no pace to the transition. And, because the D cannot control its own end all the forwards are getting trapped deep in their defensive positions.

So, if the Flyers lose tonight, watch for Holmgren to do his magic trick and go after a Dman. I believe Montreal is ready to part with Subban. It would cost Couturier. But a better choice is Yendle. He is also supposedly available, the cost would be a little higher.

That's just it. There is more than one problem with the team. Dealing with one of them will help, but there are still other areas in need of improvement that go toward righting the ship.
