I agree. I don't see a lot of reason to trade him for a Prospect and pick. I would rather trade him and a pick for another veteran who can play top 4. Or even keep him if he will sign for less.

Would you trade him for Mezaros from PHI?

He's a RW, EDM definitely has to trade one of the "untouchables"...I would say Yakupov++ for Perry.

I would consider that deal if EDM has no long term plans or short term use for Whitney. It's a fair deal. I would love to see Dumoulin or Morrow or Maata and forget the 2nd round pick.

I'm sure you would... but none of them are worth a "rental" The way the pens d is playin I would expect more then a second, but not one of them.... too much

Think cap hit. Horcoff's actual buyout number is $4.7mil. His cap hit is a combined $11mil for the last two years of his contract. If you were to buy him out and then sign him for $2mil per, the actual amount is down to $8.7mil. While it might sound like the player wouldn't want that, I think Horcoff hates how fans bash him over his contract. He'd win the love of many fans if he willingly took a pay cut.

Keep in mind his compliance buyout would not appear on the Oilers cap, so the $5.5mil that is currently there could be turned into $2mil per.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the buyout is at full contract value. So its 7 million. Pay him 2 mill for 2 season and you are all of a sudden paying him 11 million for two seasons just to save 6 million in cap space? So your actually paying him an extra 4 million to save 6 in cap space?

it should be noted that you can not buy out theplayer and then resign them to a lower contract... that is cap circumvention and the nhl was quite aware of this when they put the compliance buyouts in the new cba.

No, it's not at $7mil. Two-thirds value because of his age. Unless the new CBA has changed that, but I don't think it did. It's only full amount if the players is over 35.

Is there no buyout option during the season? Cause I am not entirely convinced they buy him out unless they really need the space seeing as we got plenty of space(at the moment at least). Yes his contract is brutal but he is quite serviceable as 3rd line center.

No, you can do buyouts at certain points throughout a season. The Oilers will wait to buyout anyone until the end of the season when compliance buyouts don't count against the cap. If there was a period now when they could buy him out, they'd be stuck with 2/3 of his contract counting against the cap, spread out over a number of seasons. Nobody wants that.

Guess what I meant was going into next season during the off season. Don't see the real incentive as we have lots of cap room even with the reduced cap. I would expect them to only buy him out if an opportunity comes up for some key free agent signings.
