Yes, teams can trade cap space and money. I forget the exact rules, but IIRC it's half the cap hit at max. - Jsaquella
You think the Flyers use any of their buyouts? How long do they get to keep them for? |

I don't think that is the case. Only thing that can be done is the team trading a player can retain part of the players Cap hit. |

I'm not in panic mode at all. Actually I have said to stay the course for another 10-15 games before considering a move. I just think expectations should be lowered if the current team is in tact bc defensively the blueline isn't good enough IMO. - stveshdy
My expectations are that this team can be a playoff team.

I'd very much prefer Seabrook or Keith to Yandle. Doubt the Hawks move either, though, with the way they're playing. - Jsaquella
I've been thinking about what the team should probably look at doing. To be completely honest I'd like to keep the kids.
Calgary is in a poophole right now, and I would look at bringing in Giordano for some sort of package including Voracek.
Sign either Visnovsky or Streit for the back end in FA.
Draft D, and hope one of the kids grows up to be something special.

I like Seabrook, but I dont know if I would trade Cooties for him.
I think Duncan Keith is the real star of that D. At the same time, Chicago has a good thing going on with those two for the next decade if they choose to. - flyer_nutter
Seabrooke is really the better overall player, in my opinion.

They can use the compliance buyouts in either 2013 or 2014. If they don;t use them, they lose them.
Using them this year would likely be in an effort to sign a guy like Corey Perry or Ryan Getzlaff as a UFA. Personally, I wouldn't use one this summer, but I see the financial logic in Bryzgalov & Briere. That's not in hockey terms, but financial only. |

I'd defer to MJL. He's more in tune with the cap than I am & I ain't googling poop today |

I see it as a huge mistake to get into any long term deal for a Visnovsky or Streit in Free Agency. Maybe a one or two year deal at a reasonable Cap hit at the most.

It all comes down to whether Perry and Getzlaf want to stay in Anaheim. I wouldnt be at all suprised to see both of them sign long term deals there.
If Perry or Getzlaf hit FA though, the Flyers should be all in. |

The big key with Briere is age. The key with Bryz is the potential cap penalties if he retires early. I'd really wait and see what happens before the summer & would try to keep the compliance buyouts for summer of '14 |

I didn't see the Kings or Devils making the Final last year. Get in the playoffs and see what happens. |

No long term deals.
2-3 Maximum.
At this point I just dont see any real #1 d-men or guys with that potential out there. Yandle is not it, and I dont see Phoenix parting with OEL unless its for a kings random.
I think the Flyers have to accept they will either need to draft "that guy" or wait until they are truly available in FA or via trade. I dont see that happening any time soon. Young d-men with solid all round games cost a premium. |

If they land a good puck moving defenseman in trade by then, I wholeheartedly agree. |

My opinion is if they get Meszaros back, and have the rest of the blueline playing in the right spots. Along with improved overall team defense. This blueline is better then you think. Not championship quality on paper. But certainly better. - MJL
a lot of that rides on kimmo, imo (i know, not a big stretch of a statement). but if what we see now is what we get with him, then i think we don't have a single top- pairing d-man on our team (coburn and drej are more like good 2nd pairing guys imo). might still have decent depth, but it's tough to be successful that way (not impossible)
wish we could've locked up carle for something reasonable |

I think if Bryzgalov keeps up with his play you have to keep him. It would open up another hole, and even a young goaltender with star potential would eventually cost a lot.
With Briere I am 50/50. Only if the team can get one of Perry or Getzlaf do I send Briere out. |

That's all I'd say. They have until April 3rd to make changes on the roster. Loads of time.
But anything can happen in the playoffs. I will agree they're not a "serious" contender and wouldn't be a favorite to win. |
