Neither is Letang. Who is the last 25 or younger dman in the history of the Flyers franchise better than McDonagh?
Let's see...
Boston, Orr and Bourque
Washington Langway
Montreal: Larry Robinson
Islanders Potvin
Oilers Coffey
Rangers Brian Leetch
Wings Lidstrom
Devils Niedermayer
Flames Al Macinnis
Where are the Flyers young defenseman who are even in the same strasophere as these guys? - PLindbergh31
If in your definition McDonaugh is a #1, then the Flyers have absolutely had a #1 under 25 years of age. You and I apparently have a different definition on what a true #1 is. McDonaugh is a nice young player. But he's now where near a #1.
And to answer your question, no Flyers defenseman has been in the same stratosphere as those players at 25 years of age.
You've picked out 10 players in the history of the NHL. All Hall of Fame superstar players. How many defensman have there been? My point is the same. All the players you named are rare players. |

Am I the only one who thinks Schenn will not be traded because it will piss off his brother?
We'll see. - Daman
that's not very professional of him if he does |

If you told me Phoenix would trade Yandle for Schenn, I would make that deal 365 days out of the year. I value defenseman much higher. Easier to get another Schenn than a Yandle IMO. - stveshdy
I agree on valuing defenseman much higher. But like I said, there are other variables that need to be considered. What do you think you're getting in Yandle?

Near a PPG in the SM-Liiga? Damn, I'm on board with that. - Jsaquella
Yup, solid for a 17 year old against seasoned pros in a very well respected league. |

My point is why do others franchises have them, and the Flyers don't? What are we chalking this up to bad luck? Just named 12-15 franchises who have had legit young studs on their blueline, without even researching it. It is rare yes, but I see other teams doing it. |

I'd be okay drafting a few D-men and signing a guy like Visnovksy or Streit for a couple of years as a stop gap.
I dont know how good the trade market will be either. I dont really want to waste assets on a guy unless he truly does have that #1 all round potential. A guy like Yandle for example, is not that to me. - flyer_nutter
The stop gap theory is a consideration. I would assume Homer would be interested in resigning Kimmo in that scenerio. Personally, I would not have interest signing Kimmo and a second stop gap.
Taking Yandle out of the equation, any player with that profile is going to cost. It will cost a B. Schenn + in my opinion. I like Yandle, but I can see the opposite point of view. |

Holmgren said today Simmonds was still having concussion symptoms and would be re-evaluated tomorrow. With concussions you never know. I think he will be out a while, he took a shot square on the nose, then smacked his head on the ice very hard.
Erskine knocks Simmonds senseless, and he misses two games vs. Pittsburgh. The rules to these suspensions are pretty comical. - PLindbergh31
erskine said it was reactionary, not reckless, and that his suspension was too stiff. are you (frank)ing kidding me with that (frank)ing bullpoop? |

A defenseman who can skate the puck and provide more offense. A player who can upgrade the PP with his shot from the point. His defense may not be great but its good enough in todays NHL. He is better than any defenseman we have at this current time. Some would say Timmonen is better but hes on his last leg IMO. |

To be fair, the Flyers have never had one. The closest thing to a young number one guy was probably Jimmy Watson. |

Haha I know, some will still find a way to put the kid down. That would be one I'd take over a d-man but that would require being in the top 5 which I'd hope to avoid if possible.

Flyers have had one Hall of Fame defensman who didn't come to them until later in age. How many teams have had Hall of Fame Goalies? I see other teams doing it but when teams have had one of those players in the history of their franchise. I think that answers the question. It is extremely hard to get. And yes, you need some luck. Draft a player in the 2nd round and have him turn into Weber or Lidstrom.

Yep. Not complaining about it. just trying to figure out the reasons why it hasn't happened. Looking back at the drafts some of those players I listed were available when the Flyers selected and were passed over. Rod Langway twice. |
